Fret Levelling - Do It Yourself?
Any of you guys ever leveled and crowned your own frets?
I have one of my Tellies that needs this, and I don't know if I should buy the tools and take a shot at it. The humidity came along and threw a bunch of my guitars way out of whack.
The prices for these tools (at StewMac) are ridiculous.
Sanding beam $132, Straightedge $76.50...etc... Crazy prices for such simple tools.
But with all these guitars around, they need to be fixed pretty often. In the long run maybe it's best to get the tools and learn how to do this stuff. I usually do my own set-ups, intonation, pick-ups or whatever, but I don't screw around with frets too much.
Do you do your own fretwork?

Ken, I've gotten brave and done this a few times. I use a thick flat file to wear down the high spots then a few finer files and steel wool to polish the tops. Good idea is to use masking tape on the fretboard in between frest to prevent scratching the wood. Works like a charm!

I bought the tools and do it myself. Prices ridiculous as you said, but after repairing dozens of guitars, got my money back a few times.

Just about every guitar I own have gotten the treatment. Strats still suck though.

I guess I'll try to find the right tools on ebay or Craigslist first. Two local guys want up to $150 to level the frets and set it up. So... it's time to learn.
I've been watching tons of guitar repair videos.

I bought the set of 3 of these
stewmac.com/shop/tools/leveli...the two set of these
stewmac.com/shop/fretting_sup...I made one of these
stewmac.com/shop/tools/leveli...absolutely essential, one of these and associated grit sanding rings
stewmac.com/shop/tools/sandin...and selected sized nut files
stewmac.com/shop/nuts,_saddle...with these, you can do a decent job. I use the fret rocker to chech between each set of 3 frets to find high ones, mark that fret in three spots with a sharpie, then use the diamond files to level overall, then finish with another fret rocker check and if there aren't many high spots, singly dress that freat. the dressing stick is then used to smooth out each fret using medium then fine sandpaper rings. If u want to go the next step and polish, that's up to u. I never did. My guitars play fine.

how are your nuts and saddle now rick?
6/30/2012 11:53:51 AM
Thanks for the info guys.
I've spent the last few hours trying to find these tools on Ebay.
I've found them at about 1/3 the price Stew/Mac wants.
I'm actually thinking of buying a guinea-pig guitar. ...like a cheap Epiphone LesPaul, or SG. For about $100.
Then I can use it to practice and experiment on without worrying.
I'd also like to learn about pearl inlay... so...
My new Gretsch is in the shop getting her frets leveled and crowned. I need a pro for that one.
Meanwhile this tellie...I might take a crack at this one. It's buzzing like a bastard and I've tried everything. Humidity has taken it's toll.
Even the best guitar tech around couldn't get the buzz out of it. I'm gonna try shimming the neck next. If it doesn't work, at least I can just take it out. No harm done.
Thanks again, -Kenny

nuts fine, saddle fat. Kenny, that's why I hate Fenders.

I have eight telecasters and they are my weapon of choice. Are you on the TDPRI. Telecaster.com?.. many vetrans there... i do all my set ups as well... had to learn. Shimming is for when the action is too high.. i suspect yours is not... I would raise the saddles slightly on the strings that buzz. Aim the neck like you are using a shotgun and are looking through a site... strait??? tele necks fretboards are curved where most gits are flat... maybe a slight truss rod adjustment is needed but maybe a couple of strings need to be raise just slightly. Make only small adjustments.. nothing drastic... you can get roller files cheaper at the hardware store although im am not experienced in this department... the TDPRI is a good research tool for teles.

Good advice, and thanks. But I've already done those things, and so has my tech guru who is a luthier and builds arch tops.
he has been fixing guitars for about 40 years and has done work for some pretty famous players, so I trust his judgement.
This guy says the frets need to be levelled.
I raised the action to the point where it just makes me grunt.
So, I'll order the tools and have a crack at filing the frets myself.
If I screw it up, I'll get it fixed one way or the other, but I think I can learn how to do it.
7/6/2012 11:53:38 PM
And Rick, How can you hate Fenders?
Come on, now!
7/6/2012 11:54:58 PM
Good luck.. I would trust his judgement too. Good luck.. i just checked out some teles that are not in my rotation.. a they are a little out of whack as well... the heat... gonna try the humidifier first and then small adjustments... looks like it might be time for me to learn too.

There's lot's of videos on Youtube that show you how to do it. I might start with one old shitty guitar I have, just to see if it works... I've been thinking of buying a "Project guitar," Some pretty looking pc of shit to hack around with, like a Epiphone Les Paul, or something. I have so many old pickups and parts hanging around, maybe I can build a Frankenstein?
7/7/2012 1:37:44 PM
I have a crappy 1987 Peavey Patriot (MIA) that will be my guinei pig. (Could have used spell check there - don't know how on this site). Thanx for the idea.. youtube and TDPRI.

Down with Ugly- Good talkin' with ya.
Seriously, let me know what you learn.
My summer hobby will be to get a shit guitar, and either completely ruin it, or make it better.
I don't care either way, as long as I learn...
7/8/2012 11:57:01 PM
Before I did my first one, I was very apprehensive too. No Guts no Glory! Just use common sense when doing it. Don't "over file" initially. With experience you'll figure out when to stap and check. Worst thing that could happen is u buy a new neck. I DO like Teles for their tone, Strats are just one big PITA.
7/9/2012 9:48:31 AM
Good talking with you to Ken! I will.
7/9/2012 10:16:43 AM
See, guys? We CAN have a thread on LR where musicians can exchange ideas in a civilized way! Hooray for us!
I'm gonna install some pickups in this guitar soon too. I'll let ya know how the whole project comes out. Still looking for a cheap Epiphone or something to experiment on. Craugslist is full of 'em. Talk to ya soon...
7/9/2012 11:56:45 AM
Go get 'um Jaspa!
7/10/2012 2:19:23 PM
Yeah i got a couple of lp's on cl on the cheap. Like 200 each. I still play mostly teles though.
7/11/2012 11:00:10 PM
I've never owned a Les Paul. I have a couple of Gibson acoustics, but I wish I had a Les Paul. I used to borrow one from time to time, and a few SGs. I love a good old SG, but it comes down to bucks... I ain't got much of those.
7/11/2012 11:35:36 PM
build one
7/12/2012 9:14:24 AM
I will. I've been looking.
My project , right now, is this Gretsch.
God! I just love this guitar!
Bob Meltz worked on it, and let me tell ya - you can get your guitar set up by most any music store.
The guy who does the work might be good, or he might suck.
Bob Meltz is the fucking best I have ever seen.
I had to wait 3 weeks, but when I got this guitar back, I can NOT believe how much better it is.
I have owned and played many guitars in my life, but he has got this thing set up SO NICE... I just can't stop playing it. I don't want to.
The frets are just right. I actually had to raise the action a little because it was too easy to play! ...and the little things ...I never asked him to do, but he did them anyways... Can't stop playing this guitar.
Next: Locking tuners, and one new neck pickup. TV Jones Classic... after that, I'll start the Epiphone experiments.
This is fun!
I jammed with one of my old keyboard players tonight. He kept saying: "Let me hear that thing again."
7/15/2012 12:48:30 AM
You're right. The proper set up is everything.
I thought my Adamovic was pretty close to perfect, but then I had Kevin Federico (formerly of Daddy's) set it up and this thing practically plays itself.
7/15/2012 2:00:50 AM
I took an Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor and converted it to a Gretsch 6220 style. Replaced pickups with the TV Jones filtertrons, added a Bigsby and rewired to Gretsch style setup. Love the sound.
7/15/2012 10:58:06 AM
Rick, you have any pictures of that? You're definitely on my wavelength! I would love to try a project like that. I'm trying to find a used (cheap) hollowbody Epiphone or something like it on craigslist. I'm in no hurry, because I'm still modifying this Gretsch, but when I finish this I'll pick up a used guitar and hack away at it fearlessly.
7/15/2012 11:43:25 AM
The video Don posted was useful. Ron Kirn who builds teles uses a 12" quarts block and sandpaper. Might try that route when i attempt this.
7/15/2012 10:24:15 PM
I'll take some tonight
7/16/2012 11:40:43 AM
ahh quartz.
