Marillion is coming to Boston!!
These guys NEVER play in the US but they'll be at The Paradise on Saturday, June 16th. Who else besides me is going? Gary?

"If I told you once I told you a Marillion times....we're nothing like Genesis!"
- Lead singer of Marillion
But they are a cool band.

Wayne,
I'd love to go but the ChILD Foundation Fundraiser at Lucia's is that day.
Is Rothery still with them?
5/31/2012 8:52:50 PM
He is indeed! Thy have a new album about to come out too.

"We're nothing like Genesis!"
Marillion is better than Genesis.

Very talented players no doubt. But what I do not like about them (and never have) is that they are one of many groups --Flower Kings, PFM (Italian Prog band) etc...-- that worked very hard at mimicking and riding the coattails of the original prog bands such as Yes, Genesis, King Crimson and ELP.
Close (perhaps) but definitely no banana.

Paul, not sure what the chimps have to do with Marillion, but I think they're very original and they have an extensive catalog of great music. Like this for instance:

Anyway, I'll be at The Paradise on Sunday June 16th to see them. I guess I'll have to go alone, unless someone else is going...
6/2/2012 5:29:02 PM
Whoops, Saturday June 16th, not a Sunday.
6/2/2012 5:29:37 PM
It's a joke Wayne. A play on "close, but no banana".
Capiche paisano?
6/2/2012 6:13:48 PM
Can you tell I really love this band?
6/2/2012 6:18:42 PM
While I'm posting links to great music, have I mentioned my much more talented younger brother lately?
wardmorgan.com/music.htmlGREAT STUFF!! And CD's are available.

The comparisons with Genesis are unfounded. Marillion is unquestionably my favorite band. Genesis bores me to tears.
What Rothery and Kelly did back in the "Fish" years was nothing less than brilliant, and no less a synergy than Lennon and McCartney.
Now that I've blasphemed already twice in one post let me go on...
I had been listening to Marillion ever since they came out, often having to pay "import" prices to get CDs unavailable in this country at the time.
I only realized just recently how much Steve Rothery (not Pete Trewavas) has influenced my playing style and one tune planned for the next CD is title "A Marillion Reasons Why".
I still get a woody every time I hear Kayleigh.

Be that as it may, I'm not impressed. Not my cup of Prozac.
6/2/2012 11:59:18 PM
Gary...are you saying there is no Genesis comparison?
6/3/2012 12:11:05 AM
I guess the comparisons came out of a need for "sounds like".
I've been hooked Marillion since they came out, but never really gave more than a passing glance at Genesis. Go figure, for two band that supposedly sound so much alike.
I have nothing against Genesis, but I can't shake the mental image of watching my doped up brother-in-law who looks like Ziggy Pop prancing around the living room playing air keyboards to "Lamb Lays Down on Broadway".
6/3/2012 12:27:22 PM
HA! That was quite the funny yet disturbing picture Gary, so I'll diffuse the Genesis/Marillion discussion on the grounds of past mental imagery! I'm picturing a Russell Brand sort of guy wearing tighty-whiteys and blanket tied to his neck as a cape with his arms in spread eagle as the opening piano riff to "...Lamb" is blaring through a ghetto-blaster.
6/3/2012 2:48:39 PM
You've met my in-laws?
6/3/2012 3:25:34 PM
If Milhouse goes prog the band should be called "Mamillion"
6/3/2012 3:46:44 PM
Genesis. Another great band that I never really connected with.
I appreciated Abacab more than their early stuff with Gabriel,
maybe because the songs were more commercially crafted.
As far as I'm concerned they never approximated the power, prowess and overall mastery, of ELP, Yes or Gentle Giant.
Marillion is third rate by comparison.
6/3/2012 3:53:34 PM
To each his own. Personally I wouldn't pay to see this band in a Marillion years...
6/7/2012 7:21:09 AM
I will be attending the Marillion show @ the Paradise on the 16th for sure. Every tour since 83'. A Very rare stop in Boston. It will be killer. Talk about a "cult" band, these guys are always great.
6/11/2012 2:56:55 PM
Cool. I'll see you there Jim. Call me at 978-851-0117 if you want to carpool since parking may be iffy.
6/12/2012 1:57:40 PM
Morganic, I will be coming into the city from Dedham. I have your number , not sure what time we will be there.
6/12/2012 8:31:40 PM
WOW! That was truly an awesome show!! Even the opening act (Sun Domingo) was inspiring (they did a spot-on cover of "Eclipse" by Pink Floyd.) Steve Rothery is my hero, and I will definitely be getting myself an E-bow very soon. Steve Hogarth gave it everything he had, as did the entire band, and they sounded very much like their recordings. I loved it all, especially "Afraid Of Sunlight"! So glad I went.

And they did a nice version of "Kayleigh" as well.
6/17/2012 1:00:41 AM
Actually, Steve Hogarth hardly needed to sing since the capacity crowd pretty much sang along on every song. Who knew there were so many Marillion fans in Boston?
6/17/2012 1:04:08 AM
Sorry I missed it, Wayne. I never did get to see Marillion live.
6/17/2012 10:36:00 AM
I really love the Flower Kings. They are an amazing band! I always feel so happy and at ease when I listen to their tunes that I immediately want to buy serenata flowers on line via
serenataflowers.com/flowers-on... . They are amazing! AMAZING! :)
