What does it take to get a million views on YouTube?

Purple Frog Popsicle
We’re currently brainstorming over this music video asking ourselves “What makes a successful music video?” And of course, the burning question of “What does it take to get a million views on YouTube?”

Musicians, like everyone else, can’t help succumb to their own vanity. It’s like “Here’s me bopping down Main Street USA looking really cool and shit” with the music playing in the foreground. Who really wants to look at some old Bohemian (yes, that’s my nationality) bopping down the street? Well, I thought it was cool, but who really cares?

Just peruse YouTube to what are the videos people are watching these days. For example, look at Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance video. With over 11,000,000 views, I must admit the multisensory battery of sight and sound (and perhaps some other senses) is nothing less than mesmerizing. This techno babble, by itself, might have otherwise never held my short attention span for the whole three minutes, but the combined sight and sound imagery was captivating, and have left an indelible mental impression. Sort of like the Geico Gecko, like him or not, he’s stuck there.

It is about now where all the altruistic musicians are certain to chime in, asserting that they would never compromise their musical morals one iota because they are artists. These are often the same musicians who without hesitation bend to a weekly crowd’s request for “Margaritaville” or “Sweet Caroline”. Let’s face it, whether you’re a musician skipping around puddles of urine between sets in some dive bar restroom and responding to the third set intoxicated “Do you guys know any Stevie Ray Vaughn?”, or just punching a time clock at Walmart; we all sell ourselves sometimes. Forget the starving artist bit, most of us like to eat.

So back to the music video. Music videos potentially take our music to the next level. The mix of sight and sound now leave an impression on the minds of our audience on two fronts. This multisensory assault might even go further, perhaps using scratch and sniff technology on the covers of CDs to intrigue yet another sensory perception. Suddenly, every day sights, sounds, and smells could trigger memories of our music.

Needless to say, Shakira has not answered my numerous requests to participate in the forthcoming video. Looks like I’m on my own. Back to brainstorming.

I used too, but then I saw this show on TV about how they treat little chickens at McDonald's so now, I am boycotting McD's and no longer eating eggs! Truth is, I'm confused? I don't know weather to like chickens or eggs first?
