Lowell Rocks rankings
i actually have (what i think) is a valid question, and since i like to think that i have now established myself as somewhat volatile like some of the others that frequent this place, here goes.....and remember your snide remarks are welcome, i love a good ribbing and i'm always ready for flame war, ya just better be ready for what i throw back!
my question; The rankings on the MP3 page of lowellrocks..........what drives the ranking/numbers up or down? and why are the bands on these lists unchanged for the last 6 months? is no one updating? is anyone voting? i understand that those at the top certainly earned the spot, but even Micheal Jackson was unseated by Nirvana after 12 weeks. and who runs this site? i wanna talk to them........
and holy shit! a TOOl coverband?
where can i see them?

the top five in the alternative rankings have not changed in 8 months, and one of them is a cover song that is anything but "alternative"

Rick the webguy owns the website and he was here recently looking for something.
But the mp3 section on this website I really don't know of anybody that pays that much attention to it unless someone plugs something they just posted.
I think the mp3 player was part of the revamp when the pictures came to the top of the web page. It might have been earlier.

The ranking has always been a mystery. The categories and ranking don’t even match up to the genre.
There are a few bands listed on the rankings that have not been working bands for at least a year now.
I dont know how that works?

I think, and I could be wrong, that technically no one is really running this site.
Rick the webguy and Big Daddy shared duties for a long time, then Big Daddy didn't want to deal with it anymore, and Rick had already kinda moved on to other things (his web business etc.)
Of course, they could still do anything to it they want at any time, but I think they have a very Laissez-faire approach these days.
I don't think the ratings have any rhyme or reason. (sorry Ski ;-)
I'm not sure they ever did.
Truth is, at any time and at their whim, this place could disappear with the wink of an eye.

The First Amendment only applies to the federal government. Lowell Rocks can restrict your "free" speech all day long and it's okay since this is a privately owned board.

Free speech has come up time and time again here. The short answer is: Ronin is 100% correct. End of story.
In speaking to the rankings of the mp3's and the bands, it's a proprietary algorithm applied against several criterion to come up with the ranking. In short, LR doesn't divulge the exact system so it can't be exploited, but I can assure you all it isn't a) random or b) bullshit based on what the principles deem as worthy. It's driven by users.
On a different note, I'm enjoying bandfan's new persona--how about you guys?

Lowell Rocks.com is private yes. If it is viewed by the public and they want to join,They type their name in the box and it becomes public accessable.Whats the big restriction on voicing ones opinions here in public,thats the freedom I'm talking about.We're entitled to our own opinions aren't we? Most of us can do that without infringing on other peoples rights or defamation.As well as tell some jokes and act juvenile from time to time (some more than others).

Ronin is correct; However, at least from my perspective, the 'owners' of this site 'allow' our freedom of speech with little restriction as long as it follows the their bylaws...There are some 'users' here that like to 'think' that they 'run' this site and can be quite childish at times but for the most part freedom of speech is encourage...My perspective..I could be wrong....

P78,they do obviously because public discussion is taking place on the site everyday.What they do is place the responsility of what a member posts in public on the member.That means if something posted by a member is libelous,slander,defamation of character,obscene,etc.etc. THEY(the owners) are free from liability through terms of use and the publisher who violated the terms assumes responsibilies.
