I've got you all beat. The Dave Clark Five, July 18, 1966 at Shady Grove Music Tent in Gaithersburg, MD. It was very similar to North Shore Music when it was just a tent. I was not quite 11 and I had all their albums, since they were my second favorite after the Beatles.

My next concert was The Byrds in Annapolis in 1970. A whole bunch after that...

I made a cottage industry out of going concerts! My first was Queen at the Boston Garden September 26, 1980. The crowd was giving Freddie shit about his moustache and he politely replied: "Fuck Off". A group called Dakota warmed them up, one hit wonders with a top 10 song called "Mystery"

J Geils Band, Lowell Memorial Auditorium, 1975, $7.50. Set the bar very high for all live acts to follow.

Kevin, I've heard that a lot of these singers now use teleprompter type things that look like monitors. At our level of local musicians often playing in several bands at a time, it's one thing, but I agree that national touring acts that are doing the same show night after night should know the words of the 15-20 songs they do all freakin' tour.
7/2/2009 11:40:58 AM

.. writes:
I hate cheat sheets-

I know there's places for 'em, but I always chose (and still shoose) to make the words up if I don't know them- if it's a song where I know it's going to be noticed, I memorize the words

It's just a safety net.

I see it the other way. When you've been gigging the same songs for 15, 20, even 30 years... and you're doing it night after night... there ARE times that your head wanders and for WHATEVER reason, you have a brain-fart and need a quick reminder where you are in a song.

It was Ian Gillan and I dont know how long we had been with Sabbath at the time. I do remember him bending over and because his hair was so long, you couldnt tell he was reading lyrics. Of course I had shitty seats on the side of the stage so I saw it all...lol. Sabbath was wayyyy to loud and the mix was horrible. The best sounding song was their encore (which was Smoke on the Water). It sounded great because we were in the parking lot getting ready to leave....lol

I was at The Dregs and Rush too, Other than Farrenheit shows (Which number about 60) I've seen Rush more than any other band. Including Rush at the Montreal Forum in 1994!

I was also at the Triumph show in 1985 when they filmed the MTV music video for "Follow your Heart" where Rik Emmett caught a stage explosion in the face and had to be taken out in an ambulance...

youtube.com/watch?v=3sh_htrpj...

The rest of the band did about 12 more takes without him, and then he came back from the hospital and took a bow at 3 AM!

Aerosmith.....1973...I was 14 and my best friend's sister was in her first year at Lowell State College. She bought the tickets for us.
They played The Costello Gym. And the tickets were...$2.00. I remember because I could afford a ticket. And we waited outside the gym doors and some guy pushed us aside and said "Hey, make way for the band" And it was them. Entering the same door we eventually passed through. They looked like the Rolling Stones. Their garb that is. But that was then. Steve, Joe, Brad etc. patted us on the shoulders as they passed. Upon entering it was standing room only but they sounded incredible. We had heard the 1st album before the show so knew the songs.

The scary thing though was it was general admission and this was '73. I did experience being picked up by the crowd with my feet not touching the floor only for 20 seconds but scary even for a 14 year old. No control that is. That is how we entered. I learned back then to never go to another show without a seat.
