the economy is wreaking havoc on my business,,,,
y'know,,,it's that time again. fall season,,,breaking out the gig book and calling all the contacts. since we are only a 2 pc.,,,,we are having a tuff time going against bands who are playing for 2 pc. money. i don't fault them. they have to make a livin' too. such a combination of clubs going with no or hardly any entertainment and the freakin' economy,,,that it is really down to the nitty gritty now. you basically have to play for peanuts to get out there so that people may see u for parties,,etc. jeez,,sometimes u wonder if it is all worth it!

At least Lawrence is still full of arsenists, Ski!! They'll keep you busy!!
9/23/2008 2:05:39 PM
ya, barb. that's one thing i didn't screw up in my life. i kept a regular job. i guess i should'nt be complaining.
9/23/2008 2:08:11 PM
Entertainment is a luxury, not a necessity, especially in tough times.
We all must adjust or we die. Figuratively, of course.
9/23/2008 2:08:44 PM
And a job that will always be needed... why didn't I become a hygenist or a nurse?
9/23/2008 2:10:03 PM
jenn,,u still can. lotsa work,,but yur still young enough.
9/23/2008 2:12:04 PM
Didn't this happen around this time last year too, Ski?
Looks like you were able to stay busy this past year.
It seems that a lot of the clubs that used to book live music 2 nights/weekend have now gone to only 1 night. The ecomony is killing them too. . .
You'll do fine-cream rises to the top!
9/23/2008 3:01:42 PM
sorry, economy (I wish I could edit my posts)
9/23/2008 3:02:33 PM
Or, in MY case, "Shit Floats" !!!! : )
Unfortunately, someone leaked it out to club owners, that we actually LOVE playing music... and they're taking advantage of it......
9/23/2008 3:08:09 PM
look at the bright side Ski, what you're doing is probably twice as much fun as the other Firefighters part-time jobs. When my Dad was on the Fire department he was an exterminator part-time!
9/23/2008 3:13:00 PM
yur right, swannee! yes,,paula,,it was this time last year too. last year i was complaining about just having to CALL all the clubs for gigs. this year i'm crying about the ECONOMICAL answers i'm getting. does anybody have any spare prozac?? i can't stop crying!

It's hitting everyone hard, everywhere. What are you guys in the NE paying for gas right now? How much is diesel? We've been out of gas almost completely for a week here in Nashville. About 1 in 10 stations have any. We had an engineer booked to come in to the studio today and he was two hours late because he had such a hard time finding a station that had some. When they do have it it's around $4.15 - $4.25 a gallon. I'm glad I work from home - no commute.
9/23/2008 4:32:29 PM
woah...we're at 3.60 or so depending on where in New England you live.
9/23/2008 4:34:06 PM
You should risk it and take the bus.
9/23/2008 4:39:05 PM
wow,,wasn't aware of that. frig it,,,i'm saving every dime i make now.
9/23/2008 4:48:01 PM
Wow,that sounds cheap right now. How bad is that, when gas over $3.50 a gallon sounds cheap?
9/23/2008 4:53:27 PM
The bus is diesel and that is between $4.09 and $4.70 per gallon and a bus only get 5 - 6 miles per gallon. You do the math. But a bus is the ONLY way to tour!
9/23/2008 4:56:19 PM
i think it only costs a couple of bucks at most to take the bus the whole route.
9/23/2008 5:40:03 PM
they don't make bus passangers gas it up up in these parts.
9/23/2008 5:40:32 PM
Diesel is around $4.39 up here right now. I have a diesel van that I only take out on gigs—which are becoming fewer and fewer.

Good thing I earned certificate from the DeSade Institute. Now I can a make a bundle pedaling male enhancement formula as a telemarketer form my house!

What a life! What a career!! (NOT!!!)

Why do firemen need second jobs? They shouldn't. Most I know are EMTs in their spare time though. I can't call 911 without being asked how my mom is. I could be an EMT. I like blood. or a Phlebotomist!

jen,,u don't make a lot of money in this trade. i have health insurance(which i pay a lot for),,,,and i'm hoping to get a pension in 8 yrs(which i have contributed to for 23 yrs). my town,,,for the last 25 yrs. has always had a "money" problem. we are the lowest paid in the merrimack valley but the busiest. trust me,,u don't do this job for the money. u have to work 2 jobs if u want to start a family.
9/24/2008 8:54:47 AM
I love working in the healthcare field right now. It;s always needed and always busy.
9/24/2008 9:06:40 AM
Oh I know it's done for the love... and the calendar. My mom was the adminitrative assistant to the Nashua Fire Chief for something like 25 years. And her boyfriend (a long time freind of the family) was the Fire Chief before the one she worked for. I just think that is an occupation that needs to be paid more. And i still can't spell cheif right no matter how hard I try.
