Testing the LR airwaves (again!)
I just posted a new mp3. It's my new band Stranded Roots rehearsing the CSN song Carry On. Damn, this stuff is fun to do. I've always wanted to do this song. This was our first attempt at singing it together around one mic. We did two takes and I blended them together. Good fun!

AMAZING.

Tony,
Whereas I always expect anything from you to be exceptional, THIS is exceptionally exceptional! Holy Schnikees!!!
The only think musically I wish I had done, or wish I could do is sing harmony, especially in that manner. Teach me Obi-Wan!!
Awesome man, just awesome!
9/21/2008 1:54:04 PM
LOL JZ, you kill me man! Thanks!
Thanks Barb!
9/21/2008 7:41:22 PM
That is Incredible, and I don't even care for CSN! Nicely done, WoW
9/21/2008 8:21:23 PM
Tony, damn nice job! Wow!
9/21/2008 8:22:42 PM
WOW!!!!! I LOVE that song and I especially love you doing it!!
Awesome job......want more!!!!
9/21/2008 8:28:55 PM
As we speak, I am setting up my studio to start recording the band.
I'll post some more songs soon. Thanks so much!

Great Job Tony!! Brings me back to the old "Wood And Steel" days
seeing you guys play at Pollards on Middle St.!
Are you going to be taking the new band out to gig? You'd be crazy if you didn't!
9/21/2008 11:25:51 PM
Very cool. Smooth vox.
9/22/2008 7:01:22 AM
jesus,,tony,,,that was just a rehearsal????????? the song in itself is superb but what really gets my goat is the production process. u hit a grand slam with all the tricks. kenny and dave better be looking over their shoulders!!!
9/22/2008 9:50:05 AM
Give a listen!
9/22/2008 1:20:26 PM
Very Very Cool......Nicely Done !
9/22/2008 1:40:36 PM
wow, that was very cool!
9/22/2008 3:18:09 PM
Thanks again guys. Paul, peanut shells on the floor! AG Pollards was great back in the day. Wood-n-who? lol
It's great to be playing and singing again.
Stranded Roots has been out a few times already. We've been using a Bose stick with fantastic results.
Ski, thanks man, it's just reverb and the right mix. It's the double tracking that makes it "phat". Almost all the vocal groups from the 60's did it. I swear the CSN version is at least triple tracked.
9/22/2008 10:47:55 PM
Groovy Tony!
What's the line-up? Who're you singin' with?
9/22/2008 11:01:40 PM
Superb!
9/22/2008 11:14:36 PM
That's Ronny Leathers on guitar and vocals and Alan Gadde on bass and vocals. Alan Gadde played in a band called MidNight Traveler out of Boston.
Wood-n-Steel opened upon them at the Paridise back in 1980/ 81. Talk about full circle huh?
Damn it, it IS groovy isn't it?! lol More to come!
Thanks Carl.
9/22/2008 11:23:12 PM
I'm so used to the 4-Way street version, this one sounds quite different but nonetheless very very nice. You really nailed it!!!
9/23/2008 7:15:16 AM
Tony has that rare combination of skill, great ears, and good taste.
9/23/2008 1:32:23 PM
Thank you Ken!
9/23/2008 2:47:39 PM
tony, this is one of my all time absolute favs of csn songs!!! and it is really hard for bands o capture the essence and feel of that song properly with those harmonies...
but you guys really, really nailed it!! WOW!!!
it has that 70's sound to it, great harmonies, i get such a great "feel" listening to it.....
i hope to hear more from your group out someplace soon
9/23/2008 4:16:08 PM
Just groovy Tony, just Groovy, I'm having flash backs to the good ole day's of herb and wine, I love that middle harmony, must be some cool cat!
What a suprise hearing this on Lowell Rocks, who'd a thunk!
9/23/2008 5:48:25 PM
Very nice, TC. I have discriminating and picky taste when it comes to harmonies-- loved how some of the tones are straight and others use vibrato, a nuance that most folks over-do or underplay. Excellent dynamics and a great diminished harmony right in the middle, which isn't easy to do. You'll have to sign that old pic of me/you at princeton station from last year so that I can sell it now...
LOL !!
Kidding aside, great job. Love it.
9/23/2008 6:03:21 PM
Thanks cc ! It's been ages, I hope everything is great with you.
Hi Dot, thanks, I'll post a local gig when we find a place. Are there any good "listening" rooms around?
Eggman! You expert texpert joking smoker you! Groovy man, just groovy that you're here.
9/23/2008 8:02:34 PM
The Groton Inn would be perfect, Tony.
9/23/2008 8:03:07 PM
I know that joint
9/23/2008 8:09:37 PM
The Groton Inn, now known as the Stagecoach Inn & Tavern is a nice room, but I think it caters to more original music, based on the artist listings.
Groovy Baby
9/24/2008 7:23:17 AM
Tony, did you ever try playing this song with drone tuning?
E E E E B E - Stephen Stills uses this in Carry On and Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. The fifth string is tuned to the sixth while the third and fourth strings are tuned to the E an octave above that (and an octave below the first string)
It's cool on acoustic guitar. The harmonics really ring out.
9/24/2008 11:43:02 AM
WTG Tone...I remember those Wood N' Steel days at the Dub, early 80s even before we met!
9/24/2008 11:52:04 AM
Seeing Wood N/ Steel painted all over the city of Lowell...you're devoted fans tagged the city.
9/24/2008 11:52:42 AM
They did-those paintings are how I originally heard of Wood-N-Steel
9/24/2008 2:06:18 PM
I will NEVER tell, but we knew who spray painted our name all over the city. It was very funny hearing people tell band members that they were responsible for the graffiti when in fact it wasn't them. True story! "Dude, you know the Wood-N-Steel on Bridge Street?
I did it." NOT! lol
9/24/2008 4:36:18 PM
As always, great sound. Well done.
9/24/2008 4:40:53 PM
Tony,
Wow! Sounds great.
Let us know when you play out.
Rod
9/24/2008 5:19:25 PM
Would n't Steal,
umm, I like that name
Groovy!
9/24/2008 5:45:38 PM
Thanks Ken, I'm going to try that. I've heard Stills do it in Eb and E (drone tuning), and in D (standard tuning). The guitar track on the mp3 sounds like crap. It was only picked up my a vocal mic so I'll definitely be re-tracking that. Cool.
9/24/2008 8:26:36 PM
Amazing!!
Are you playing out yet?
9/24/2008 9:29:23 PM
sounds nice,
great vocal harmonys
way to go
9/24/2008 9:42:16 PM
Tony - That sounds great... That particular song was on our short-list of tunes to learn for 2009. (one of a few potential CSN tunes)
I love hearing "great songs" being performed great.
thnx for sharing and good job.
9/24/2008 9:54:04 PM
Rodman, MusicMall, Saxman, thanks! ThatGuy, Thanks! I think your band is great. Love your version of Day In the Life. We do that one as well.
Be good, hope to catch you guys sometime!
tc

"A Day In The Life".........Tony. I remember very clearly Wood & Steel nailing that tune in Pollards way back when, although the version posted here by Acme is stellar as well!
9/25/2008 5:51:02 PM
Paul it's one of our best songs. It's astounding how much noise the three of us can make when we need to! lol
9/25/2008 8:07:37 PM
LOVE that Tony, and his attitude.
Taste.
Smarts. Ears,
