I'm sorry, but she is an excellent reader and did a fabulous job. In fact, I think she kicked some major ass tonight. If she can deliver like that without a teleprompter during a debate? Pffft--Biden is toast

A lot of the left wing media has been focusing on who wrote it (I guess it's a Bush speech writer) but totally miss out on the important part. In fact, the official Obama camp immediate rebuttal tried to paint it in that whole "4 more years of Bush" mold because it was his speech writer, as if anyone thinks President Bush could have ever given a speech like that! And as if anyone could confuse her fresh from Alaska throw da bums out attitude with same ol same ol)

No other candidate could have given that speech. It was written for HER. From her point of view (clearly)

After the Palin whirlwind this week, the whole "4 more years of Bush" narrative sounds really tired to me.

Giving a good speech and being able to run the country are two vastly different things. I still have the same concerns about her ability to run the country if McCain gets elected then kicks the bucket.

That said, if the speech is as boffo as everyone says, Obama supporters are probably starting to sweat.

I'll try to catch the speech on you tube today, so I can see for myself.

I might add that in small towns, we don't quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren't listening.

We tend to prefer candidates who don't talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco."

My biggest fear of an Obama presidency is going back to the Clinton attitude towards terrorists. Bubba and his ilk believed it was a law enforcement and not a military issue, even after they attacked the WTC the first time, bombed our embassies in two African countries, blew up Khobar Towers in Saudi killing 19 Airmen and attacked the USS Cole.

Terrorists have no Geneva Convention rights and are considered illegal combatants, thus giving them no right to a trial. We've bent over backwards to protect their "rights" and it's still not good enough for the left. I swear some of them have more respect and admiration for OBL than our own president.

LAST LAUGH writes:
Great speech and all from what I gather from the news this morning and this thread but I have to agree with Dog on this one. A speech? It's WRITTEN for her! If these politicians actually had a mind of their own and didn't cater to the populous maybe things like national healthcare and the deficit would actually get better. I realize you guys are intelligent people and I like you all but I seriously think MOST Americans are missing the point. The debate club and telepromter delivery shouldn't elect a president. Geez, Axl Rose, Jay Leno and Steven Tyler could do well in an election if that were the case.

I have NEVER in my 37 years on earth seen WORSE candidates who I could see running this country and actually doing a good job. Obama will never get elected in a million years and McCain is probably a cousin of Bush. The VP's are like having a backup QB...they don't matter unless the starter gets hurt.

IMO politics are a bullshit thing as a whole. They may work on a SMALL town level in some cases but mostly it's just another gentlemen's club with lots of whispering and winks. I don't believe 1 bit in political parties...I'm American not Democrat or Republican...or Independent. WTF do they mean? We have a democratic government? So we are all democrats? To the Republic for nwhich it stands? Republicans? Independent? A declaration we made in 1776. I call foul.

Not wanting to be bothered or not making an effort to be informed is why politics is considered bullshit. I will agree that the candidates this time around are far from ideal, but not voting or voting without being really informed is only going to further exacerbate the perception of BS.

Why do we have Obama and McCain this time around? Because most American's couldn't be bothered to research--they live by sound bites and political ads.

For me, I'll gently hold my nose and vote for those who's ideals are aligned most with my own, not for color/race/gender/sex appeal.

And for the record, I think it was Dana Carvey that was the funny part of Ross Perot ;-)

Americans like sizzle not steak in their politics. Charisma and image, not issues and platforms are what sells.

We can thank the majority of the U.S. voters for how politics are these days. Most people only respond to soundbites and a half-understanding of what candidates stand for. And it's why some people still think Obama is a "secret muslim" and why the whole baby thing was an issue with Palin.

Okay - let me start with "The Bad".

And it's not just re: "HER" speech... I know it's a Republican rally and you're preaching to your own choir, but this was the first-time I was turned-off by a Giulianni(sp?) speech. I felt he went (for my taste) a little over-board with the pandering - uncharacteristic of him. Normally, I love the guy.

On to Palin - first, the negatives: I was expecting something different. It was said by the media beforehand that there was a statement from her camp saying that "SHE" would not beat-up the opposing candidates and leave THAT up to others... but, more than half of her speech was bashing the opponent and making the same point(s) over and over - I get it.

There will be time for bashing over the next span of months - but what are you going to *DO*... not what do you think your opponent CAN'T do...

For those that read my "rant" on Obama's speech - the thing that impressed me the most was that he WASN'T slamming the opposition and spent a good amount of time talking about what he wants to do in office - THAT is the stuff I care about.

I was really hoping to hear Palin take the high-road and use her first high-profile appearance to show what she's made of and discuss what her (their) plans are. It really felt like the speech writers went for the low-hanging fruit.

The Good: Having said that... I think she spoke with conviction and passion. I think she has a good head on her shoulders and by NO MEANS do I fault her for ANY of the "personal" things going on in her life. She may not have a lot of experience either, but she doesn't show it.

I don't know much about Libertarians, I should probably read-up on them... because I am no Democrat by any means... but after seeing both of those speeches, I am no Republican either.

I am tired of them thumping the drum of 9/11 and terrorism and using those sound-bytes as if they have some sort of inroads to solving terrorism. You can't "stop" terrorism... it will never happen - you can only control how it manifests. I don't think EITHER of the candidates have any idea how to keep us safe from future attacks - but I think instead of focussing on "fear" of what might happen, we need to understand that something needs to be done and work on that - that's a given, but we also need to fix our domestic issues.

Sarah Palin *DID* give some general topic points about fuel independence and alternatives... but again, they were touch-points used to launch attacks at the opposition.

Once again - I get it... you feel Obama's a schmuck... it's a given - let's move on and hear what you PLAN TO DO.

I know ALL their speeches; Obama's, McCain's, Palin's, Biden's, etc. are written for them. It's a wash across the board. To diminish how good Sarah's speech was by saying it was written for her is not fair. Perfect example - supposedly one of G.W.Bush's speech writers worked on Palin's speech - Her delivery is FAR SUPERIOR to that of our current "Chief".

So - overall - I was impressed with her persona, charisma, charm, ability to communicate - I think she is a smart person and probably fully-capable of performing the role. My criticisms stem mostly around the content that was written for her. I wanted to hear more substance... not cheerleading and name-calling.

In all fairness - I shouldn't be comparing HER speech to Obama's - but I didn't see anything from Biden... I must have missed it. Will look on YouTube. Can't wait to hear McCain's.

ThatGuy said: "In all fairness - I shouldn't be comparing HER speech to Obama's - but I didn't see anything from Biden... I must have missed it."

Exactly. Comparing her speech to Obama's and mentioning that his wasn't so negative is really comparing apples to oranges. The Vice Presidential Nominee speech is supposed to be the attack dog speech. It traditionally sets up the good cop bad cop scenario that allows the Presidential nominee to "rise above it" and be statesmanlike.

As for preconceptions that she wasn't going to attack, I don't recall it being her camp that said that, I think that was speculation from pundits. But even if it was, you could make the argument that her attacks were actually responses to the attacks on her in the previous two days.

Especially the "community organizer" line. Let's not forget that the joke was not intended to demean community organizers, but to directly attack the criticism that Obama personally made about her just being a small town mayor. I believe she was saying a mayor IS a community organizer, but with actual responsibilities your average soup kitchen organizer doesn't have. The left is jumping all over that line but they're preaching to the choir, since I don't think any inner city community organization whose sole existence depends upon grants for government programs was ever in any danger of voting for Sarah Palin.

Big Daddy - That's actually a good question.

And it was from NBC (I forget what correspondent, reporter or anchor) that I heard the comment that Sarah was going to avoid personal attacks - doesn't mean it was factual.

And as I said before - I thought the immediate response of the Obama camp upon McCains running-mate choice was totally a low-blow move and discredited a lot of what he spoke about the previous night.

It's definitely the official end of journalism in this country. Now, you simply have to listen to the "news" and then listen to the partisan talk shows to hear both sides. In the long run, it's probably better this way. We're still getting all sides, but the old "journalistic integrity" lie is no longer fooling anyone.

Fear of women in power is nothing new, for they are stronger than we give them credit for.

I hate to sound like a scholar or anything, but, there is an old Greek saying, that I can't actually remember how to say, but I'll try to explain it the way my father once taught it to me.

Giving birth is the only thing that a man will never understand or endure, which gives the woman that extra "edge". The pain, and ablility that goes through that is beyond comprehension.

In the movie "Zorba The Greek", there is a painting hanging in his home. The painting depicts a woman laying down and there is a steamship in the background, however because of the artists use of perspective, it almost seems as if the steamship is passing between her legs, but it's not meant to be phallic. This painting is symbolizing this old Greek saying I mentioned.

Meaning that a woman's womb has the strength and power of a steamship. Physical AND mental power.
When it's said in Greek it has more flavor to it.

Woman are strong, don't underestimate them.

Now on the flip side, I did read some right wing comments about how the stage for Obama's speech reminded them of stuff from Nazi Germany.

Let's just say the left has no corner on the looney market.

They should tell McCain to stop talking and let her do all the speeches. Then, he might have a chance.

McCain seems dedicated, but public speaking isn't his strong suit.

He just has a weak voice, perhaps from the beatings he took when he was a POW. It's too bad, I like what he has to say.......but HOW he says it sounds like a bucket of gray water.

McCain is a much better speaker than the current boob that is in the white house. I have no issues with Palin running this country IF that is the case...She is strong, determined, and will not take any BS from anyone...Sounds like my wife :-)....
I would have voted for Hillary IF she were the Democratic Candidate because I think she fits the exact same mold but WITH more experience but she is not and I just cannot vote for someone with such little experience and a running mate that has done absolutely nothing in the 30 + years he has been in politics...This country needs someone that will stabalize the country as a whole not just our economy but our interests in the rest of the world. We need to be careful as the balance of power seems to be shifting a bit.I want my children to enjoy a strong and fruitful economy AND a country that still possesses advanced military and technological skills....

Exactly how much kool-aid have you all been drinking? Have any of you seen the clips of her interview with Katie Couric? I didn't think I would ever see a public official that was less articulate than George Bush, but here she is. She looked terrified, she couldn't string together enough words to make a full, intelligent sentence. If you actually believe that she would make a good leader for our country and you vote for McCain/Palin and she actually becomes our leader (god forbid...), then you all deserve what you get - just like the morons that voted Bush in TWICE!

Politics can bring out the worse in people. I personally have my opinions and yes I do get animated at times BUT at no time do I let my political views affect my relationships with family and/or friends...I happen to like the McCain and Palin Ticket...I am confident that IF they get elected that collectively they will make the changes necessary that will make this country 'right' again...Others have the opposite opinion...That is fine..Either way we have to support our Commandar and Chief..Be Amercians FIRST then a politician....
