STUFF A SOCK IN IT

Gary Smejkal
Gary Smejkal writes:
I trying to find my own “signature sound”, I’ve experimented with many different basses (e.g. Conklin, Adamovic, Odyssey) and bass effects (e.g. BassIQ) with a lot of very good and amazing sounds, but not exactly what I was looking for.

THEN SERENDIPITY…

This weekend, I tried stuffing an old sock under the strings right in front of the bridge, and “Viola”. The result is a very cool, lightly muted sound that I have been unable to reproduce electronically or any other way.

Now I realize that muting the bass strings is nothing new, but the soft muting produced using a sock has a nuance of its own.

Stage presence will suffer a bit... With an old sock hanging visibly from my bass.

I thought that if you left a sock on the bass it was a DND signall...

Millhouse... What's a DND signal?

Kennium... I always practice "safe socks".

Sorry to go off topic but, Gary what did you think of RTF?

DND = do not disturb.

One sock on the bass as a DND and the other sock for other, um, purposes.

God... Sadly, I missed RTF. A family emergency had me out of town that week. I heard they were awesome.

Now where am I supposed to stuff that sock?

under the strings. right infront of the bridge.

makes your bass sound like a viola, or so i'm told. :)

I use fluffy cotton swab stuff. Same idea. With flat wounds. (When I play bass with "All Summer Long" (Beachboy Tribute)

I have one old bass that actually came with a string "dampener" that screws onto the bridge for the same kind of muting.

That's the early 60s sound all the way.

Carl Ayotte writes:
I learned it from the great session player Carol Kaye, from the FAQ section of her web site:

"I've always used medium-gauge flatwound strings since I play exclusively with a hard pick (with a flat wrist, not like guitar players). And I always use a doubled up piece of felt muting on top of the strings just over the bridges to dampen the over- and under-tones for a cleaner recorded sound too (good for live work also). If you play with fingers and maybe sometimes with a pick, I'd advise to use only the foam underneath the strings barely touching the strings for this sort of muting of unneeded extra-tones."

I'm not claiming to have discovered anything new. My 1974 Rickenbacker 4001 had an adjustable hard foam rubber insert for muting the strings, but this gave an unexciting "thud" sound.

I guess the qualitative nature of the sound will have to do with the specific nature of the "dampening agent" used as well as the pressure against the strings.

Besides, I like the look of pieces of laundry dangling from my bass.

Absolutely true! and fun to try different materials. I used felt on one bass and it's not as good

Great show Gary, I posted the setlist a while back on here, they have them listed at the RTF site. The good news is they were all saying they wanted to do it again and not wait 25 years this time so you might just get another chance to see them. Maybe even a few new compositions.

Gary,
Well being a DiMeola fan myself I would have to concur I think Al was the highlight but I got to tell you, Lenny White really blew me away. The guy does some crazy fills and it hardly looks like he broke a sweat. But realistically it was RTF, and every one of them was great. Really glad I got to see it and hope to again.
