Carl and Friends Wednesday (August 27) UKE!!!!
GET THIS!!!
Melvern Taylor, Kenny Hogan, Carl Ayotte, and YOU jamming on Ukuleles at Princeton Station on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 from 7:30 - 10:30.
We've talked about it for a while, and now it's going to happen!
The first part of the night we'll be playing solo sets, original and cover on our ukes, then we'll join forces on stage with anyone who shows up with a ukulele, and start jammin' on some simple 3 chord wonders!
I'm particularly proud to have as my friends this evening, Melvern Taylor, and Kenny Hogan. They're two of my absolute favorite local songwriters, and certainly my favorite local Ukulele enthusiasts!
If by some chance you haven't heard either of these guys, check them out below!

What are you doing UP?
Go burp the baby.
Seriously, I'm looking forward to this.
It's a pretty cool thing, that Carl is putting this together.
I haven't done any live gigs in a long time. If I die, just prop me up with a piece of wood and play a recording.
The chance to play with one of my heroes, Melvern Taylor, is just too hard to resist.
We've talked on the phone, sent e-mails... etc.. but I'll finally get to meet this guy!
Carl and Mel started me playing the uke.
I still suck at it. I'm gonna come out of hibernation, stink the place up, and smile like a bastard.
Thanks, Carl for putting this together.
The weird thing- is that I've been planning to see Melvern and Jen Kearney the very next night at The Lizard Lounge, In Cambridge.
That's been on the calendar in my kitchen all summer.
I never thought that I'd meet the guy, do a gig with him and Carl on the night before!
Funny how things just happen.
8/16/2008 1:31:26 AM
But when I play, it makes that sound from the Three Stooges, When Moe takes a pair of pliers and plucks the cactus needles out of Curly's ass.
PLINK!
8/16/2008 1:38:05 AM
Hee hee, yeah, I have to go to bed soon, but my mother-in-law has the baby tomorrow, so I can sleep in, and get prepared for my evening wedding gig without getting baby food on my tux.
8/16/2008 1:38:40 AM
Go Gabbly!
8/16/2008 1:39:13 AM

8/18/2008 12:01:56 AM

8/18/2008 9:05:16 AM
I miss camping!!! Ukuleles and S'Mores!!!!
8/18/2008 11:13:08 AM

I gotta see this!
Quick non-hijacking story.
Carl, one Monday a month I play one hour of piano, sometimes sing a few Englebert, Jim Reeves tunes, for the North Chelmsford Senior Center. I never look forward to it until after the gig is over. It's an easy hour, easy bread, piano is there.
I show up last Monday, and the place is decked out like what your house used to look like B.C. (before child)
I said to the coordinator, "Uh, is it the wrong Monday?".
He says, "No, we're having a Tiki Themed Party for the lunch hour this week, I hope you know some Hawaiian Music".
I was about to turn around, get in my van and call you and tell you to immediately get your arse and uke down there, because I wasn't prepared for this at all. I know they're old, but even THEY would catch on that I played "Tiny Bubbles" 12 times (once in each key).
But I opted not to call when I noticed the other part of the entertainment was a Hula Dance instructor. Sometimes a man's got to do what a man's got to do.
I listened to a few tunes on her CD, realized it was I - V with an occasional IV or vi (thank God for that Music Degree), and she danced in front of me for 60 minutes.
"It's good to be the King"
If they do this again, the gig is yours!
Ok, August 27th at the Princeton
Uke Jam
BTW, that call about "Muskrat Love" had nothing to do with that gig, it was other one I had that day.
8/18/2008 12:34:20 PM
You should have called me anyway!!! I would have come down with my Uke just for fun!
And for the record, the house has not changed at all! If anything, I've added Tiki! The media room became the Family Room, the dressing room became the Nursery, the kitchen basically stayed the same way but with a whole lot of baby stuff in it, but the two portions of the Tiki Lounge (Lounge and Dining Room) remain Tikified!!!
PS. Did you get the Hula Dancer's Bizness Card?
8/18/2008 12:39:46 PM
Looks like Prairie Home Companion comes to North Chelmsford!
8/19/2008 1:20:30 AM
In Steve Martin's autobiography "Born Standing Up", he says that his favorite part of "The Jerk" is that duet with Bernadette Peters, and it always bothered him that no one else (the masses, not musicians) found it as warming and entertaining as he did.
8/19/2008 1:32:08 AM
Carl - We're tenting on the beach on the Saco. :) Kayaking!! woohoo!
8/19/2008 6:51:44 AM

NOW THERE"S AN IDEA!!!
;-)
8/19/2008 7:19:32 AM
I'm planning to do the Brudah Iz version.
8/19/2008 11:52:57 AM
and who knows, maybe a Lesbian wedding will break out!
8/19/2008 11:53:24 AM
please, PLEASE save rainbow until i get there???
I BEG YOU!!
:-)
8/19/2008 12:03:00 PM
One week away!
I really want to see some Uke players come out of hiding and join us!
Come on, I know you're out there. You bought the thing on a whim, you played it a few times, had fun, but put it down and just haven't had the opportunity to use it.
Well here's your chance!
Aug. 27, 2008
8/20/2008 11:50:17 AM
JZ - I actually LOVE that scene in the movie bc it's so random and cute.
8/20/2008 11:51:24 AM
I saw that movie in the theater, opening night! I was such a Steve Martin fan when I was a kid. Kept the torn ticket in my "Cruel Shoes" book for years.
The Ukulele player on that track, even though Steve Martin is an accomplished Banjo player, is actually Lyle Ritz.

8/20/2008 12:01:48 PM
Lesbian wedding or not.
The Big Iz's version of "...Rainbow" is poignant and haunting at the same time.
I was a big ER fan in the day, and the song always reminds me of the episode where Dr. Greene dies.
Poor Goose!
8/20/2008 12:24:18 PM
Here at Carl and Friends Wednesday Industries, we always aim to be poignant AND haunting.
8/20/2008 12:40:52 PM
((((Cue Peter Griffin))))
"Like that time I visited Shotz Brewery..............((((flashback music)))))
"Sniff, sniff, wow.....so poignant to think that this is where it all happened in the 70's. All this history and..........AHHHHHHHH!!!!! Eddie Mekka with his shirt off!!!!!"
8/20/2008 1:06:10 PM
OMG I love ER...I was thinking the same thing about that song. When they play the episode where Dr. Green died...ugh so sad I cried lol
8/20/2008 1:31:26 PM
Don't get me started on Dr. Greene... I just loved him....I can still picture his last episodes in Hawaii. But he will always be Goose to me..
Bump for Carl and friends!!!
8/20/2008 1:39:38 PM
That song always makes me smile. :)
8/20/2008 1:58:22 PM
A reminder: This is a very rare chance to see Kenny Hogan (Kennium) performing live. He is semi-retired from performing and to work in the studio on those incredible songs we all get to hear here at LowellRocks in their various production states, though always fantastic! And he's sure to be performing a few of them on the Uke!
If you haven't heard Melvern Taylor live before, you are really missing out on one of the area's best singer/songwriters.
I've seen him with his band, and solo on the uke (the way we've got him next Wednesday) and I can honestly say that he's my favorite. I'm not just talking local either. There is no singer/songwriter out there who I'd rather see live.
And while perusing Youtube I found this:
youtube.com/watch?v=1xzqikjg0...
8/21/2008 10:42:09 AM
That was excellent.
8/21/2008 12:58:46 PM
...I'm not retired Carl, just bored with playing in bars...
BUT THIS is DIFFERENT!
This is gonna be fun.
This, for me, is a challenge.
Because of guys like Carl and Melvern I started playing the ukulele last year, and I love it.
I discovered that the uke is not just a quirky little toy.
It's a valid musical instrument.
I found out that you can do a lot more with a uke than just playing Tiptoe Through The Tulips.
Now when I think about the Ukulele, I think of Jake Shimabukuro, not Tiny Tim.
A chance to play with Carl, AND Melvern on Uke?
How could I say NO to that?
How could that NOT be fun?
Two great songwriters, I listen to their CD's quite often, and I'm considering it an honor to be asked.
Melvern and I have talked on the phone and e-mailed a few times, and I've been listening to his newest CD all summer long, but we've never really met.
I finally get to meet this guy!
Wednesday night!
8/22/2008 9:54:55 AM
I know you're not retired, that's why I said Semi. Well, that and I love to say the word semi.
I'll be finally buying Melvern's latest on Wednesday night!!! And probably a few more for friends.
8/22/2008 12:00:42 PM
I spent most of yesterday looking for new uke songs to play.
8/23/2008 10:50:44 AM
Bump....
Senor
8/24/2008 3:51:44 AM
I hope he doesn't get stuck to a toilet seat.
8/24/2008 9:12:21 AM
I hung out with Melvern the other night and got his CD "Love Songs for Losers".
Thank you for two reasons.
Thank you for giving me the CD
And after listening to it about 14 times already, thank you for making me realize how much fun music is. I'm speechless. If I had one word to describe it, I couldn't, but here's two: Fun and Honest.
I really wish I could get out to see y'all on Wednesday, knock 'em dead guys!!
8/24/2008 1:33:39 PM
Lovesongs for Losers has been in constant rotation here at my house since June. It's fabulous!
8/24/2008 1:50:21 PM
I listened to Mel's "Salisbury Beach" while sitting in my lounge chair at the beach today. It's the perfect beach song.
8/24/2008 5:08:43 PM
THIS WEDNESDAY!!!
Come on out closet Uke players!

Maybe Carl?
I have a whole list of songs you would not expect to hear on the ukulele, -and a few that you would expect too.
Then I'm gonna throw a few of my own songs into the mix as well.
I'm going to have fun!
Dragging myself out of the mothballs for this one...
8/27/2008 9:38:45 AM

It happened, and it was cool.
I drove home smilin....
8/28/2008 1:16:06 AM
Thank you Melvern, Kenny, Dino, and Dave!
Great night of music!!! And I got to sit back and listen for a couple of sets!!!
8/28/2008 1:21:27 AM
I wish I could have gone. Good turn out? Plan another one....
8/28/2008 1:32:34 AM
Beginning of the night had a crowd, but it thinned out a bit too soon.
We were kinda in our own little Uke world anyway. ;-)
LowellRocks represented with: Kay, Rollie, Dot, I Like Eggs (and wife)
It calls for a more intimate room, but I knew that going in.
The Red Sox Playing the Yankees never helps out an evening either.
But honestly, I had more fun than I've had in a long time.
We played covers, originals, and we jammed for 25 minutes or so, even accompanying our bartenders who came out and hula danced for us while Melvern played some great leads.
Lots of fun!
8/28/2008 1:39:14 AM
It's hard getting a consistent crowd on a Wednesday night.
I kept looking at the clock as the night went by: 7:30, "They're getting under way". 8:15, "They're taking a break"; 8:30, "Second set" and so on.....I felt like I was missing out.
8/28/2008 1:45:55 AM
"LowellRocks represented with: Kay, Rollie, Dot, I Like Eggs (and wife) "
excuse me a-hole - you forgot some people. jeez..... and we the first ones there AND my 2 yr old cousin spen the whole time flirting with your daughter. JERK
sounded great tho!!! Woulda stayed longer if Kyle wasn't on the verge of a hissy fit! :)
8/28/2008 8:39:50 AM
JEBUS! I be losin' it!!!!
Erin, Rob, and Erin's cousin and 2nd cousin!
THANK YOU!
8/28/2008 8:45:04 AM
You've angered the lime-hat-cat.
8/28/2008 10:33:07 AM
I thought that was a honey dew melon!
8/28/2008 12:10:03 PM
I did too until now-
Imagine the size of that cat's head if it really were a honey dew melon
8/28/2008 12:13:21 PM
LIME LIME LIME!
8/28/2008 1:26:32 PM
That's a big freakin lime
