DRUMMERS: New Evans head is promising

After my post on using a heat gun to "seat" heads properly, I was happy with how easy they came up to tune... BUT... as I was fine-tuning the toms, I was realizing I was not happy with the head combination I was trying on the toms: EC1 (singly-ply head with a sound-control ring on the inside) batter and a G1 (single-ply head) for the resonant side.
It was something I wanted to try to see if using similar density mylar thicknesses might increase sustain and tone due to both materials resonating at similar frequencies.
Meh - it didn't sound "BAD"... but it wasn't floating my boat.
So... Off to the Evil Empi... uhh... I mean Guitar Center to buy my "standard" setup (I typically use a G1 on top and a Genera Resonant on the bottom). As I looked at the display rack, I noticed a new moniker in there...
Evans G Plus...
Hmm... Curious... Apparently, it's a new line introduced at this year's Summer NAMM, but it's not even on the Evans' website yet. All it really is, is a single-ply head in 12-mil (thicker than usual) variety which gives you some of the warmth and openness of a single-ply head... with some of the punch and durability of a double-ply head.
I bought the G Plus and Genera Resonant heads and headed home. I have only gotten to change the 12" rack tom so far, but initial impression is that "I really like this combo".
I tune my toms to identical pitch on both heads and this combination came up to pitch very quickly and throwing the tom up on a stand and giving it about a 20-30-second test-drive... it sounded really good. No complex overtones - just a nice, warm, focussed "note". I have not broken it in yet - and the true test will be "on a gig"... but as of this moment, it seems to hold some promise. I "may" have a new head combo for live gigs.
(for recording, I still love coated heads)
After I get a chance to take this new kit out for a gig or two with the new head combo, I will check-back and let you know (for those who give a $#!%...)

Nerdy...? Maybe, but DAMN, my drums always sound good. :)
Now, if I could only PLAY them better.

chippa gets his snare pizza box from dominos, regular cheese i think, and his tom rack pizza boxes come from some local greek joint in milford, personal pizza size. he gets a large one for his floor tom & and extra large pie boz for his kick at papa ginoz
not suprisingly his kit sounds cheesy, it could use some meat on it.

It's no different then when guitar players get into the tiny details of gear. I've just never heard drum stuff before. All I know is I end up helping the drummer pack up all his shit after a gig.:)

Heheheh... Not me. Nobody but nobody touches my gear except me. I move, setup & tear-down all my own stuff. Never ask for help. :)
Anyhow - I thought maybe *some* drummers here might find it interesting - maybe not. I'm always looking for ways to tweak the sound even more.

Thanks Scott. I'm always looking for new things to try to get a better sound. I'll have to look into these. I'm a drum nerd too!!!!
Now if I could only find that perfect ride cymbal...
