Downloading Music- your advice ...

Kennium
Kennium writes:
The itunes store SUCKS!

I need to find a safe legal place to download music.
I'm willing to pay, but not as much as what the itunes store charges.
I need new music!
I hate the radio.
I refuse to pay for satellite radio too.
I'm sick of my music library.

HELP!

Napster...is it safe and legal now?

Where can I go? What is the best place to download music for my ipod?

This comes highly recomended ...Here's a rundown on how it works: wiki.etree.org/index.php?page=...

Most files are compressed into SHN or FLAC. files. FLAC files can be decompressed into WAV files for burning to CD using FLAC frontend: flac.sourceforge.net/download....

Etree.org has tons of shows. There has to be at least one person online with the complete show (that person is called a seeder) in order to download a particular show: bt.etree.org/

Thanks, but that's far too complicated for me.
I want to BUY the music. I have this thing about songwriters getting paid for their songs.
I just want to find a place (likethe Itunes Store)
A place that has an easy to use method of purchasing mp3 music for my ipod.
No streaming, no CD burning, no satellites.

I like itunes. Its easy and a buck for a song you can keep forever doesn't sound too bad to me. I'm on a Mac, maybe its harder to use on a PC.

I use Rhapsody and subscribe to the monthly service. It allows me to download any song I want and "rent" them on my MP3 player as long as I have the service.

In addition, when you buy an MP3 from them, it's .89 a download when you have the service.

The thing I HATE about itunes store is this: You get to hear 30 seconds of the song.

So you might hear 30 seconds of the worst part of the song, which causes you to miss buying a good song,
OR
WORSE... you buy the song, only to find out that the song really sucks.
It's like peeking through a little hole at a picture and being asked if you want to buy the picture.
I have downloaded 1064 songs from the itunes store, and many of them suck. But I only had 30 seconds, so how could I tell?
There has to be a better way.
No I won't rent a song.
The ipod is the best player in the world, but Itunes Store sucks!

Hey, Ken, I'm watching this with heightened interest because I just bought my first Ipod (a used Ipod Touch on Ebay), and am about to start dealing with ITunes.

My first order of business will be to get a big portion of my CD collection onto it, but after that I'll probably be picking and choosing from ITunes.

So, I have nothing useful for you right now, but I suspect I'll be commiserating soon. ;-)

Kennium - that's why you hate it...? The alternative (before legitimate purchases) was to download what MIGHT be the song you're looking for from sharing sites with no preview. You didn't know until after whether it was what you wanted or not.

If you can't tell from the 30-seconds... it's at least better than NO preview. Heck... when you bought Records, cassettes and CDs in stores, you got no "previews" except for some stores that would have "select discs" for preview in headphones, but a miniscule percentage of the total inventory.

I would argue that 99-cents is pretty-darn inexpensive an investment for a song. (personally)

I have purchased... [thinking]... well... a LOT of music from iTunes. I think (for MY use) it is fantastic. BUT - they are not perfect.

I think eventually they need to break it apart into separate entities. It started out ONLY as a music player/organizer/library application. It did it well. Then it became the means of managing songs and data on the newly released iPods around 2000 or so... since then, it has become this catch-all application that syncronizes devices, sells music, tv shows, movies, games, ringtones, plays your media, can transmit media remotely over WiFi, etc...

It does WAY too-much now and is getting cluttered and (to me) less and less usable.

Aside from that, I find the price, speed, convenience, etc. a GREAT advantage.

Artek if you get stuck on your new ipod give me a call or send me an email, and I'll help you. I was confused when I first got mine. Get the book ipods for dummies.

Today I downloaded a song by Alyssa Graham from this site FOR FREE and if you like jazz vocals, this is great stuff
music.download.com/download.c...

They also have some free downloads of rock, blues, funk and soul etc... I got about 12 free songs there today legally.
i have 18377 songs in my itunes folder. Most of them I got illegally when napster and Limewire first came out, but I got a conscience somewhere, and I also got scared to get caught, and now I get my music legally.
I NEEEEEED new music!
Going to the beach tomorrow. I like to get my head enhanced and watch the waves crashing while listening to new music.
The problem is, finding it.

So if a tune is 3:00 long, and all you hear are the worst 30 seconds, you don't want to buy the tune because you're getting gyped paying 99 cents for only 87% of the tune that you actually like?

So if you check out a tune and hear 30 seconds and you like it, are you dissapointed if the the other 2:30 sucks?

I think any tune can be defined good or bad in 30 seconds.

Great tune. "So What?"
Miles Davis, from "Kind of Blue"
30 seconds of it sucks.

Funny story behind that tune. Actor Dennis Hopper was living in New York City when Miles was in his hey day. When Miles was trying to kick heroin, he took up boxing. Dennis Hopper worked out at the same gym and they became friends. Miles was very intellectual and always had some tid bit of information about things that they talked about in conversation. Sort of like a "Cliff Claven" type, but not as annoying.

Hopper never really paid attention to Miles' trivial bits of information and used to always say "Ya so what? So friggin' What?
And it became a running joke between them.

He then named that modal piece in Dennis honor.

Which means I have to listen to what I'm playing.......

Wouldn't it be better to hear the whole song?
Also although I use it all the time and have downloaded over a thousand songs there, it's a clunky webiste.
They have No Beatles or Led Zep, or early Larry Carlton, among others...

Some of the BEST songs there cannot be purchased unless you buy the WHOLE album.

What if I don't want the whole album?
Tough luck.
That's like going to a burger joint where they won't sell you the cheeseburger, only the cheeseburger platter.
What if all stores acted that way?
I'd like a bottle of wine.
"Sorry sir, you'll have to buy a whole case."

Itunes store sucks I say, and I don't care what any club owner thinks about music. I don't have to any more.

If they had the WHOLE song to preview, they would get stolen. You can easily loop the output from the sound card to another recording device, hence, 30 second snippets.

You realize that the decision to make some single tracks unavailable and ONLY available as part of an album purchase has NOTHING to do with iTunes and everything to do with the record label and/or artist... don't you?

Trust me, if it were up to Apple, all songs would be available and would be DRM-free. It's the LABELS that are messing it all up for us.
