Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush @ Harpers Ferry
Just got out of Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush and after a 2 and half hour straight pummeling of the guitar "god" that he is I am close to spell bound. Simply an over the top guitar tour de forse you just don't see anymore. Believe me I am a glutton for this shit and after coming off 3 Mule shows who knew this would be one of the peak shows of the summer for me. I look at guys like Jeff Beck as the real deal and I can honestly say that Frank Marino is in that group of guys that (as unknown as he is to some) is the "real" deal and more. Outstanding!

I remember his rendition of Purple Haze in the 70s'. He was one of those strat-wielding geetar honchos in the tradition of Hendrix and Trower. I remember he had this heavy whooshing phaser sound.
Rory Gallagher was another amazing, strat-wielding guitar ace
from those days. Check out his "Live At Montreux" collection on DVD if you get a chance.
Jim, I envy you seeing the Mule the way you did this time around. The first time I heard those guys back in 95' I remember thinking, "That's my gig". "That's where I really belong in the realm of rock n' blues because I play so much like Allen Woody.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!... was finally here and now he's gone?? He almost NEVER tours outside of Canada anymore. He was one of my top 2 favorites, along with Robin Trower. I have most of his earlier albums and played them til I knew every note. I saw him open for Kansas at the Boston Garden back in the early 80's and then at the Paradise in 1983.
I can't believe I missed this...

I have seen him a few times back in the day with Ted Nugent and he was the opener and a really nice guy. Last night was just unreal and when I say unreal, close to 3 hours of non-stop power riffage. I love Trower, Rory, etc. but Frank Marino is just so fluid. I was waiting for a slide to come out on a slow blues or something but it never happened, he just whaled. The first song was a mix that he called "Voo Doo Chile" but it was a physcedelic overload. I got my moneys worth the first 20 minutes. Don't get me wrong when I say this but I love the Mule and Warren Haynes (one of my favorites and we are about the same size of mass as men) but Warren and most other guitar players except Jeff Beck can hold a candle to Frank Marino. He is superior! As for letting people know about the gig all I knew was he was playing BB Kings in New York and I by chance checked his website and had an extre gig added to Harpers Ferry. Place was only half full but with all hard core guitar heads. Again it was outstanding and now I cannot stop listening to his stuff again, I've had it on all day and I plan to listen to every one of his discs and vinyl over the next couple of days. WOW............
