Shawn Lane
More fast shit.......
Anyone remember this kid when he played with Black Oak Arkansas back in the 70s'? He was actually only 14 in this video. Check out all the associated videos on him. Remarkable guitar player!

No he probably was 16. He was born in 63' and the video was shot in 79'. I checked Wikipedia. I was going by what somebody had told me.

Hasn't he passed on? There are some awesome fusion tracks out there!

Yes Chris. He passed in 2003.
I got this info from Wikipedia:
"Lane had psoriasis his whole life and also suffered from psoriatic arthritis from the age of about 13. This did not impair his playing but caused difficulty walking, and required treatment with steroids which seriously affected Shawn's weight so much that he weighed over 300 pounds in the years before his death (though Shawn was slim in his youth). He also smoked constantly. On September 26, 2003 Shawn died in a hospital in Memphis, shortly after being told that he would have to remain on medical oxygen the rest of his life.

Chris,
On my way home from a band meeting in Salem, NH I took a ride down Northeastern Blvd. and checked out the old NIO facility.
The parking lot is gutted, abandoned and overgrown. It was kind of eerie.

yeah, i can't agree.
tragic no doubt, interesting sure, but the overthe top praise? i don't get it. what am i missing?
7/24/2008 6:35:35 PM
yeah, where did he get his degree?
7/24/2008 6:39:26 PM
I know. The more you listen to it....just a bunch of nonsense. Super fast diarrhea. His keyboard playing sounds the same. Not bad for a 16 year old though!

Speed sometimes puts us in a state of awe but there is no substitute for somebody making just a few notes stick in your memory forever.

Right, that clip when he was a pup is kinda like Vinnie Vincent, all 32nds and really no definition. BUT, dig around a bit and listen to some of the clips from the 80s and 90s. An absolute monster, I'd say near genius and almost to the point of savant syndrome. I mean it looks like he just put everything into music and neglected all else. You won't ever find many players like that. I'm not surpised he kicked it so young.

Wow!!!

Then again, being 16 and touring with a major league rock act speaks for itself. Michael Schenker of Scorpians fame was like that.
Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme was quite an early bloomer as well.

I posted once about Shawn before. I loved his music when he was alive and still do now.
I remember how I found out he was gone. I went to buy his last CD "Tritone Fascination" and it was not delivered for many weeks.
So, I went to shawns site to see what I could learn becuase I got no help from the record lable to get the CD sent.
Shawn left a note on his site that read something very close to this,
"Due to circonstances WAY beond my controle, 'Tritone Fascination' is no longer being offered by (whatever the lable it was). We are working very hard to resolve the issue and I am truly sorry about any problems you may have encountered. As soon as the CD is available again will post the information here on the site. Again I am deeply sorry for any problems this may have caused. Shawn"
About three weeks later, I went back to the site again to see if the CD was available, only to read that Shawn had passed away. It sucked.
I still wonder if that's what may have caused problems with the lable.
What a lot of people don't know is that most of what was on Shawn's records music wise had nothing to do with shred guitar playing at all.
In fact, it was only about 5% shred if that. His music was actually very diverse. You'd hear one thing that was like Chick Coriea electric band, another that was very new wage and something else that would sound like southern googie.
His playing was nothing like what most people would think. The saddest thing about all of this is that most people who remember his playing often focus on how fast he was. That was only a small part of what Shawn did.
Another interesting thing about Shawn is that he read many books each day. He wasn't just an amazing musician, he was actually a very educated man that could just soak up information like it was no tomorrow.
Not many people are born with so many talents and abilities. I wish he was still alive.
If you like, check out a song by Shawn Called "The way it has to be"
I think you'll see what I mean about his playing when you hear it.

You have got to be kidding me dissing that guy.
He is 16 and burning the walls down playing with B.O.A.
Listen, when anyone on here rips like that guy and is playing in front of a few thousand people they can throw stones.

You said it Beef!
