Randy Rhoads
Is f***ing awesome! That's all! Had to say it. Been on an old Ozzy kick as of late and listening to this guy just makes my heart sink that he died so young and tragic. We always say "if he were alive today" crap but seriously if Randy were alive today I believe he would be regognized as the greatest rock guitarist of all time hands down. EVH included! He was an innovator. His tone and texture are just incredible. We all know Ozzy is no slouch when picking guitar players. Obviously if you have the money and fame it's easy to find great talent but he literally found a diamond in the rough.

I agree Devin. The first time I heard "Over the Mountain", I was hooked.
Do you happen to know if he went to Berklee?
7/10/2008 1:48:32 PM
Glad to say I got to see him live. First time Blizzard of Oz came around. Orpheum Theatre. May 1st, 1981. 10 rows from the stage!
7/10/2008 2:48:10 PM
NO Feakin' Way that's awesome!!!!
7/10/2008 2:53:05 PM
yeah, i can't agree.
tragic no doubt, interesting sure, but the overthe top praise? i don't get it. what am i missing?
7/10/2008 3:00:06 PM
I remember hearing Crazy Train on my way to work. I went out and bought the album that night. He was awesome. And just getting started. I've always felt he was was next in the evolutionary chain of rock/metal guitar after EVH. His approach was more classical than Ed's. After him Ywngie was the next guy to really take a leap. There are so many players in the 80's and 90's that had great chops but Rhoads to me was the one that really stood out after Eddie came along.
7/10/2008 4:53:59 PM
Scott3, I hate you! I would have killed to see him live. I saw SRV front row and my jaw was on the floor for the whole show. He died a few months after. RR was the man! Correction...still is the man!
7/10/2008 4:54:58 PM
Randy didn't go to Berklee. He was studying classical music on the west coast. He actually didn't like playing metal. He liked playing classical guitar.
7/10/2008 4:55:12 PM
RR was killer on that Blizzard of Oz tour. Oh the good ole days. He was a little monster with a massive sound.
7/10/2008 5:14:58 PM
Randy was great. "Tribute" is one of my favorites.
7/10/2008 5:25:56 PM
Of all his replacements Zack Wylde is my fav. Some of the others guns he hired where not in the same league.
7/10/2008 5:37:09 PM
RR was an icon. I'm not a big metal fan, but he was such a stunning guitar player! I can only imagine what he might have done if he hadn't died so young and so needlessly. Such a sad waste, and he was only doing something that he loved to do. Life really isn't fair...
7/10/2008 6:33:31 PM
Randy didn't go to Berklee. You can tell because he could never spell it correctly.
7/10/2008 10:44:48 PM

I think 80's metal/hard rock spawned more clones than any other type of music, and guitarists were the biggest violators by a mile. Obviously, Eddie Van Halen was the main man responsible for ushering in a new style of playing, and in in many ways his style and execution has yet to be surpassed.....Randy Rhoads was one of a select few from that era who wasn't just a great player, but one with exceptional phrasing for his solos.
When you think about the fact that Ozzy's only studio recordings with Randy (Blizzard of Oz and Diary of a Madman) were recorded at the same time - not to mention his one live release (Tribute) - you'll realize that all the public got from Randy Rhoads was a snapshot of what he might have been capable of.
Players like Eddie Van Halen and Stevie Ray Vaughan flew out of the gate and hit the ground running....In my opinion, I don't believe either player ever actually raised the bar any higher fthan the ridiculously high level that they set right off the bat.....maybe Randy never would have surpassed what he started with either, but I'd say he created a pretty damned good legacy, regardless.
7/11/2008 12:18:32 AM
Well said...
7/11/2008 7:23:33 AM
RR rules. He put the metal quitar squeall on the map.
7/11/2008 7:45:19 AM
Millhouse ~ I have to say that when RR first cam eout I was like yeah yeah, but after a while I started to listen a bit more and what really struck me was when I heard a live show from way back when and I have to tell you that guy really wrenched sounds out of a guitar that are really one of a kind. I don't know if you ever heard any of the live stuff but you should take another listen. I believe I heard this concert from Wolfgangs Vault. I believe it may be this one:

eh, i never liked his tone, the classical thing wasn't novel , and i thought his playing was stiff.
And he didnt go to berklee.
sure, better than most, but not even CLOSE to greatest of all time.
7/11/2008 1:33:05 PM
Bob Weir.
7/11/2008 2:42:13 PM
doh!
7/11/2008 2:43:07 PM

WOW! His playing was stiff? I think maybe your record player is on the wrong speed bro. You name 5 rock guitarists that are better. If Ace Frehley is one of please die in a greasefire.
7/11/2008 2:54:01 PM
no ace frehley doesn't even make my 10 ten list of "great clown acts of the 20th century".
yeah, i always thought the double tracking on the studio stuff contributed to some stiffness, and that the 'classical' bit seemed contrived.
Zakk Wylde, way more feeling imho.
5 rock guitartists that are better?
- EVH
- Jimi
- Page
- SRV
- Other - (Yngweenie, Blackmore, Uli Jon Roth, Iommi)
All better.
Need i go into more guys that are better?
- Angus Young
- Vai
- Steve Morse
- Satch
- Petrucci
- Beck
- Mike Crutcher
I could go on for days. those are in no particular order.
7/11/2008 3:10:09 PM
Paul Stanley was the greatest rhythm guitarist to ever set foot in this great nation
7/11/2008 3:16:56 PM
no such thing as rhhythm guitar.
7/11/2008 3:17:29 PM
you shred, or your dead.
7/11/2008 3:17:40 PM
bob weir is in the dead.
See, that works, no?
7/11/2008 3:17:59 PM
randy rhoads is dead. See? still works.
7/11/2008 3:18:21 PM
Of all of Ozzy's guitarists I personally think ZW is the bottom of the barrel. Not saying he's not good but that squeal thing he does on every other note is just a bit annoying and obnoxious.
Jake E. Lee was great IMO. Brad Gillis was phenomenol on Speak Of The Devil. Both are better IMO. Jimmy Page a better player? LOL not even close...maybe a better songwriter. That I can't disagree with. Hendrix? Mr. Sloppy? Hehe
7/11/2008 3:26:50 PM
Dude the solo in No More Tears is one of my favorites-
ever seen Zakk play live?
7/11/2008 3:30:05 PM
brad gillis isn't a very techincal player, not in the same league. he's more a feel/tone/dive bomb guy.
yeah you aren't going to convince me that rhoads is anywhere near page or hendrix. that's not even close.
and Mr Sloppy??? thats just insulting. have you ever listened to hendrix?
7/11/2008 3:40:01 PM
Way better guitar player than he was a pilot
7/11/2008 3:44:39 PM
John Denver?
7/11/2008 3:45:47 PM
Devin, Jimmy Page wrote more licks and phrased his solos better than all but a very select handful of rock guitarists.
I thought Brad Gillis was the best guitarist Ozzy had after Randy. I like the attitude Zakk plays with, but otherwise don't put him in the same class as Randy Rhoads.
We're all entitled to our opinions....music moves all of us in different ways.
7/11/2008 3:46:49 PM
Gillis-that album woke alot of people up.More people were interested in what sabbath was going to sound like with that Rainbow guy in the beginning of the eighties.
7/11/2008 3:51:04 PM
Why the fuck argue?
I don'tthink RR was the best ever, I think he could lay out some real heavy goat rockin Sh*t.
As for Milly's choices? They are the tops in my book except Ywngie
No after a short while he gets real tedious.
EVer see or hear the G3 with him?
He is pretty boring next to Joe Satch and Steve Vai.
I love them all though!
Play the fur right off'n that thar git-ar!
7/11/2008 4:08:30 PM
Come on Labouef get in the spirit of it

7/11/2008 4:26:21 PM
Thought so!
7/11/2008 4:32:33 PM
yeah i don't like Ying-weeneee either beef, tedious bach n' roll stuff, but i figure he's better than RR.
you want a really suck ass guitarist, you need not look further than bruce sprintsteen. His voice may be bad, but at least his guitar playing is really piss poor.
7/11/2008 5:39:43 PM
Is paul stanly the sad clown that gets out of the car and has the flower that squirts water into his own face?
or the one on the wicked tall stillts?
7/11/2008 5:40:35 PM
speaking of fur on guitars, how the fk did i neglect to mention Billy F. Gibbons? (the F stands for Texas, baby!)
7/11/2008 5:42:08 PM
How about Robin Trower?
Joe Bonammassa?
7/11/2008 6:04:17 PM
warren haynes? trey anstasio (if he would sew his mouth shut and never speak or sing)...?
jimmy herring?
7/11/2008 6:09:23 PM
Comparing guitar players from different eras is pretty much impossible to do. Jimmy Page in his era was a great player and built upon the styles and playing of those before him while breaking ground and setting the pace for those ahead. Same can be said for many players. Rhoads took what EVH did and went to another place with it. Yngwie did the same.
Saying ZW is the worst Ozzy axeman is a matter of opinion. I love Brad Gillis but he was a mismatch with Ozzy. Jake E Lee was good but had big shoes to fill and came up short. Ace Frehley was good within the band KISS and their structure however in the long line of great guitartist he doesn't rate very high at all.
As good as the rock guys are personally I think many of the country players blow these guys away both in technique and songwriting. And I'm no country fan.
7/12/2008 10:02:11 AM
The thing with Zakk is, he doesn't even need Ozzy! His own personna, music and band stand solid on their own. Jake E. Lee filled the hole just fine after Randy.
and Lou hit the nail on the head! As uncomprosmising as Page was/is... his depth and breadth of music is (IMO) unsurpassed since the Beatles.
7/12/2008 1:33:18 PM
for a rock guitarist...
7/12/2008 1:42:05 PM
bruce springsteen sucks.
7/15/2008 12:30:53 AM
CPA, I know how much you've loved Page since we were kids. I only came into appreciation of him in the last 10 years or so. His layering of guitar parts, tunings, and phrasings were the foundation for many players to follow. He is definitely a torch passer in the long line of evolving git players.
7/15/2008 8:57:42 AM
spelt
7/15/2008 9:02:47 AM
he who spelt it, delt it.
7/16/2008 12:12:29 AM

7/16/2008 3:51:20 PM
Ok Devin, now you are not making any sense anymore...
7/16/2008 9:13:13 PM
