Another Variax Conversion completed
I just finished my 3rd Variax transplant. This was a Fender Showmaster done for Colleen Desmond of the band Rock City. This was not as complex as the last guitar I did. Much more like my first transplant. Have a look at some pics!

Man--that looks great Riff! Nice work! Has this become a side gig for you? If so, we may need to talk ;-)

Nice work as always Don!

Thanks folks. Thanks again to Colleen for putting her trust in me with such a nice git. I will definitely take on more of these. Not til fall though. I have at least 1 or 2 more people interested. Nothing like taking a router and ripping a hole in someones favorite guitar! muhuhuhuhahahaha

Great work Don.
I'm just wondering...
Is it possible to do that with my newly acquired Nashville Tellie and keep the pickups that are already there?
Can that be done?
7/3/2008 7:56:50 AM
Yes. The only components the transplant effects are the bridge saddles and potentially the input jack. There are a few options.

My Showmaster is a quite thin with a tapered edge, which I'm sure made it a pain for Don. I still can' t believe he it fit it all in there. You're a genuis, Don! I'm guessing there is quite a bit more space to be found in a telecaster.
PS I stayed up very very late. This guitar is soooo much fun to play! Woohoo!

Actually it wasn't bad at all. I just had to be meticulous in measuring and double-checking the dimensions for each drill/route needed. Routing into the arched face is always an issue but drilling the face while the arch is full thickness then routing into it to get to the final dimension needed to pass pots and switched through it keeps from putting pressure on thin areas of the top. Eliminating the tone pots really helped. They just weren't going to fit anyway.

"Nothing like taking a router and ripping a hole in someones favorite guitar!"
Bravo Don, that's gonna take balls of steel!

"Nothing like taking a router and ripping a hole in someones favorite guitar!"
LOL
Actually I wasn't worried about that at all. I felt confident it was in good hands. That being said, people, don't try this at home without consulting a professional, especially with a favorite guitar. It's not as easy as he makes it look. ; )

Don,
Can you remove the Variax guts from my Cort guitar and make it sound better?
:: chuckle ::
7/3/2008 1:54:03 PM
Geez, there's only so much one can do. The only thing that's going to make a Cort guitar sound better is a woodchipper...
Just kidding. I don't actually know Cort guitars very well.
7/3/2008 2:00:21 PM
The best part is I couldn't play guitar (rhythm nor lead) before this transplant but now I can! I was actually learning how to play cowbell ; )
7/3/2008 2:40:14 PM
Cort, the offical plant building the renown Variax guitar bodies.
'Leen, best part is, it's a b*tchin cowbell! ;-)
7/3/2008 3:08:23 PM
That's right, Marc, b*tchin' SMOKIN' cowbell along with the likes of Senor Bacardi and Will Ferell!
Sorry for the hijack, Riff

Marc, you wanna make that Cort sound better?
Give it to Mike Velaras!
7/4/2008 7:29:50 AM
Jeez Donny...........Can you do one for me? I have a few Variaxes collecting dust and might as well throw them in something.
7/4/2008 9:07:49 AM
Sure Matt, let's talk.
7/4/2008 7:16:23 PM
I'm pretty sure Matt is over the legal limit.
