"I'm with the Government, and I'm here to help you."
"I'm with the Government, and I'm here to help you." Perhaps the scariest words a person could hear. The question is this: given that it appears that our government (especially at the Fed and State levels) screws up more than it actually fixes, why is it that our population continues to vote for and support those who want more and more government control over our daily lives?
It is a very short list of things that government does a good job with. Everywhere around us we see government waste and ineptitude, yet we seem to be all too willing to give them more and more and more. WTF?

what do you suggest?

"why is it that our population continues to vote for and support those who want more and more government control over our daily lives?"
I'm cynical. My view is the average person doesn't put even the least amount of effort into the choices they make when they go into the voting booth. They vote based on soundbites that "seem" to align with their views or they vote based on party affiliation or whatever. They don't vote from a truly informed positiom.
7/2/2008 1:05:36 PM
er, positioN.
7/2/2008 1:06:08 PM
Dog said it best.
Perhaps we should revisit the founders' notion of having to be a landowner and involved in order to vote. That would certainly get rid of a large number of the "idiot" voters who don't base their decision on anything more substantive than who their favorite celebrity endorsed.
I joke, of course, but I do think there should be some method put in place to weed out those who don't have an understanding of the weight and importance of what they're doing when they vote.
7/2/2008 1:22:07 PM
and of course, the ACLU pisses and moans when communities want to have something as simple as a valid ID in order to be allowed to vote. Downright racist!
7/2/2008 1:26:13 PM
So if I don't drive I can't vote? Sounds like descrimination to me.
7/2/2008 2:01:18 PM
I agree with Dog about the voting thing.
Of course it doesn't matter how informed you are this time around.
Both candidates have very little to offer, and since they're willing to say just about anything to get elected, how can you believe in them?
I think I might just ignore politics altogether and focus on being happy. There's nothing that I can do to affect real change, so why get my balls in an uproar?
7/2/2008 2:03:59 PM
uh, god, you don't have to get a driver license to get a valid id.
passport, or state issued id card will sufice.
you don't even have to be legal!
7/2/2008 2:07:12 PM
Milhouse, I can't remember the last time I was asked for ID when I went to vote. They just ask me my name and street address.
7/2/2008 2:22:23 PM
I Do agree with dog and I also agree with Kennium. It's quite enough to even survive in this world and persue happiness without having to also be educated enough to know what the Government is doing and how they are screwing it up. All that extra work should be for enjoying life.
I also believe despite the sound bites which certainly do shape opinions. People vote for their pocket first. What ever party supports their income is they way they will untamately favor.
That's why I've always been in favor of character over issues any day. I would rather have someone in office that will do the right thing instead of what he or she can be pressured into or not get caught at.
I can't afford to keep up on my own job and theirs too.
7/2/2008 2:34:50 PM
they don't ask you, thats why you can vote early and often.
for some reason, it is deemed racist to ask for id when you vote.
liquor stores must all be run by the kkk.
7/2/2008 2:42:37 PM
My bad, thaought it said drivers liscence, in that case I rescind my comment and agree. Valid ID required.
7/2/2008 2:46:14 PM
racist.
7/2/2008 3:20:46 PM
bigot.
7/2/2008 3:24:21 PM
Other than the items mentioned in Article 1 of our Constitution, which I agree should be handled by government (http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/constitut... how is anyone's life really enhanced and improved at all by the big hand of government as it currently exists? Clearly there are the needy, sick, and disabled among us who need help getting through life. It is a matter of debate IMO whether the government agencies are the best vehicle for helping these people. Even excepting these people, does the expense of our government really justify what it provides to its citizenry? I say nay.
7/2/2008 3:29:44 PM
24th amendment
7/2/2008 3:34:51 PM
let me be clear about my stance: it is NOT that all government does us a disservice, but that in its current state it is far overreaching in what it attempts to do in the name of betterment of the population. Civil Rights are a perfect example of something that our government GOT RIGHT!! Now go ahead and name another.
7/2/2008 3:38:32 PM
and...off topic: pussywillow 1972...are those real Octobans you have showing in that drum kit? I've been looking for a set of them to make some samples since very little exists in terms of quality octoban samples. Can we talk? jimfist@gmail.com
7/2/2008 3:41:50 PM

7/2/2008 4:18:28 PM

7/2/2008 4:18:48 PM
"how is anyone's life really enhanced and improved at all by the big hand of government as it currently exists?"
Eminant Domian, Welfare, Stimulous checks, $4.00 a galon for Gas is certainly improved the lives of oil company owners. Federal funds kickbacks for schools that code more children with mental disabilities. And of course Drug companies that only need to include a disclaimer that maqy cause death to meet FDA regulations.
I'm sure there is so much more as well. Such as weapons companies.
You are kidding right? You don't think anybody's lives are better?
If your a White House politician you can have two homes.
Or are you just refering to us Poor saps footing the bill?
7/2/2008 6:27:24 PM
Uncle Sam is a great gig man, state prevailing wage is nice but the Federal rate is off the map!Always happy to oblige the Government. As for the current state of affairs-I'd like to thank all those brainless democrats you guys elected for taking our thriving prosperous country and flushing it all down the shitter.
7/2/2008 7:18:56 PM
The republicans would've been better?????? C'mon man, they're all a-holes!!!!
7/2/2008 7:29:41 PM
Um,Sol-Repubs took the white house eight years ago. Also held the majority of the house and senate until '06.Those fuckin' wingnuts'll tell us all day long what a great job they're doing while everything gets fucked beyond recognition. Then, they expect a huge pat on the back and "nice job".
GW"S third term-Vote for JOHN McCAIN
7/2/2008 7:51:26 PM
scary
7/2/2008 8:32:26 PM

Juice, yes, I'm talking about "us poor saps". Obviously, anyone who sucks at the teat of the state or federal government has usually got a pretty sweet gig. Certainly THEIR lives are enhanced in a positive way, but it is "us poor saps" who are footing the bill while we struggle with our every day lives to make ends meet.
And I do believe that BOTH parties are to blame for the exponential growth of government. In Massachusetts, who else can you blame but Democrats since the Republican party is almost non-existent these days. On the Federal level, W Bush has been no Reagan-ite. Reagan believed that government was the problem, not the solution. W Bush and the Republicans in Congress from 2008-2008 have been far from fiscal conservatives. Remember that the balanced budgets of the Clinton era were only possible because the Dems lost control of Congress and Clinton knew he had to play ball with Gingrich and his fiscally conservative policies. To his credit, Clinton obliged the Republicans rather than fight them because he knew it was good politics. Sorry Almac, but as far as I'm concerned, our Federally elected officials can all be painted with the same broad brush, and I think you're kidding yourself if you think that Democrats won't screw Joe Average just as hard as any Republican administration. Under Democrats, your taxes will go up. Period. End of story. That is NEVER good for the average worker.
7/3/2008 11:24:45 AM
Happy 4th of July Toolfist-True, Clinton was just a guy in a suit(with a snake hanging out of it!,Ha Ha!)it was the repubs who buit a strong economy in the nineties, thats why everyone made money back then.Ya agreed, raising taxes isn't going to help anybody and who can afford to pay more these days anyhow?Theres alot of people with their backs to the wall right now.Time will tell I guess-enough of this political BS I'm going to enjoy the holiday!Al -out.
