Pretty sure we might be around, are there any tips for negotiating Boarding House Park? Like what's a good time to get there, should we bring chairs etc...?

I saw Jen and The Onion open for Los Lobos. In fact, Morganic was there too. One of the best sounding bands ever. I was blown away, and I still remember how great it was.
At my age it's a wonder that I remember anything.
So that's how good it was.

I wish I could go. I'll be away.
I always thought Daryl Hall was a great singer and songwriter. I know that a lot of my friends consider him "un-cool" these days. I think it's an image thing. But he can sing and play, and write hit songs, and with Jen Kearney opening for him, how the hell can you go wrong for an outdoor summer night?

I heard about this and that's wonderful - congrats to Jen and her band!

FYI - I live pretty much AT Boarding House Park and if you weren't there last year things have changed. They patrol the garage now - so no tail gaiting - watching the show from there - plus the trees are in the way - you might hear it but you won't see anything. Also the baricades they put up around the perimeter now hold the sponser's banners so you can't see anything unless you're IN the park.

But people leave all the time and we scored people's stickers who were leaving and got in that way.

If you're going to park in the garage - I recommend going down instead of up to park - cause it will take you 40 minutes to get out of there at the end of the night otherwise.

But besides all that it is a GREAT venue with awesome sound and I'm very happy for Jen and her band!

Peace,
Ulli

bumpin' it up:

Jen Kearney & the Lost Onion open the show. Lowell's own soulful voiced Jen Kearney plays both keys and electric guitar along with an amazing group of eclectic musicians. Their soul, jazz and Latin influences blend together in a unique stew of sound described as “Stevie Wonder goes to Cuba” and “funky soul rock poured over rice and beans.”

Oates, Mustache Make Cartoon Crime-Fighting Team
John Oates may be coming to a cartoon near you.
June 27, 2008 , 11:15 AM ET
Kamau High, N.Y.
John Oates wants people to know that he is nothing like what he was when he had a mustache. The Hall & Oates principal is firm about the distinction, because if things go as planned, his mustachioed image could appear on TV in cartoon form kicking ass, rocking out and wearing tight pink pants.

Independent publisher Primary Wave Music Publishing, which owns a majority stake in most of the biggest hits in the Hall & Oates catalog, is shopping a cartoon titled "J-Stache" that further illustrates the dichotomy. As laid out in a two-minute trailer, Oates is portrayed as a modern-day family man and finds himself enticed back to the rock star life by his mustache, which is voiced by comedian Dave Attell.

"In a cartoon setting, the mustache has its own personality," Oates says from Aspen, Colo., where he's finishing his latest solo album. "Just as I'm represented as the John Oates of today, the mustache is the John Oates of yesterday. The focus of the music will be on the back catalog, but it's an open-ended situation. There's even talk of the mustache trying to bring new bands into the picture."

The idea for a TV show came to Primary Wave senior creative director Evan Duby while watching a Hall & Oates show late last year. "I said to myself that this guy could be a pop icon on a completely different level. I wanted to be part of bringing John Oates to a younger generation."

The pilot, which Primary Wave estimates will be between six and 10 minutes long, is being storyboarded, and the aim is to have it completed in the next two months. It will portray Oates opening a new wing of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that focuses on mustachioed musicians.

Suddenly, a dying David Crosby appears and with his last breath warns Oates of a mysterious secret group of mustache wearers bent on killing other mustache wearers. As actor Tom Selleck attempts to escape from the latest murder scene, Oates summons his own mustache with a fist pump that simultaneously changes his clothes from conservative attire to pink pants and white boots.

"This could go straight onto a network or we could launch it on the Web and then take it to a network," Duby says. As one network executive who has seen the trailer says, "These guys are approaching the publishing business from a new angle. They're taking rich copyrights and doing something innovative with them."

A review for y'all:

..."it sounds like stevie wonder goes to cuba"

as hinted earlier here, opening for daryl hall last night were local favorites jen kearney and the lost onion.

WOW

the anonymous reviewer on cd baby who suggested they sound like "stevie wonder goes to cuba" didn't get it wrong. latin rhythms, soul cadences, and a true connection with their home audience gave their "warm up" act the full heat of a headline show. somewhere a couple of songs past what would have, should have been the cut-off for an opening band, (they kept checking--"can we do one more?"), with the audience in full flow and love all over the room, the park service organizers gave jen the nod to deliver one more tour de force.

maybe it was the enthusiastic audience member's shout of "ARETHA", and clearly her band had to talk her into doing it either way, and i swear she asked them all four or five times not to give up their spots in the spotlight while the audience was on its feet, but they knew what ought to be coming, and they knew it was the right way to end their evening, and so they insisted.

and so, with just a single keyboard and spot, alone onstage with only her voice to carry her through, jen kearney delivered one of the most stirring renditions of aretha franklin's dr. feelgood it's ever been my privilege to experience.

if anyone ever finds even a bootleg cell phone video recording of that performance, they need to send me the link. jen kearney and the lost onion ROCK!

until then, here's a link to the band they opened for last summer, los lobos, singing "let's go" right from the boardinghouse park stage. and then, because you know you want it, a taste of J(k) LO from the same night. or two. (ya gotta love the park rangers in uniform introducing all the acts!)

in addition to rocking the old court during the lowell folk festival, jen hooks up with melvern taylor at the lizard lounge in cambridge on august 28th for a night where the soul of lowell meets its ukelele heart. bee they-ah!
