Jazz suggestions?

Been trying iTunes to find some Jazz but am not having much luck. I was hoping some of you guys' could give some suggestions. I don't particularly care for Jazz that is less structured (if that makes any sense). And I definately prefer vocals. Thanks!!

Mike Crutcher
Mike Crutcher writes:
You can never go wrong with Miles Davis' "Kind Of Blue". Coltrane's "Blue Train", "Giant Steps", and "My Favorite Things" is classic. Kenny Burrell's "Midnight Blue" is a good 'un. If you're looking for more accessible, blues guitar-like stuff, you could check out Larry Carlton's "Last Nite" disc.

Vocals tend to pull the improv out of jazz, so there isn't as much what might be considered "real jazz" with vocals. However, along those lines, Anything by Jon Hendricks, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald, Manhattan Transfer, Cassandra Wilson, etc. works well.

Herbie Hancock did some great jazz/funk in the '70's, including "Headhunters", "Fat Albert Rotunda", "Man-Child", "Mwandishi- The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings", and "Crossings", along with his straight-ahead jazz recordings, such as "Maiden Voyage", or "The Complete Blue Note Sixties Sessions".

There's a lot of stuff. What type of jazz are you looking for?

I agree with Mike Crutcher.
It's a tad vague to say you're interested in listening to some "jazz".

Post-Rag - Art Tatum, Earl Hines, Django Reinhart, Fats Waller
Big Band - Goodman, Dorsey, Miller, Artie Shaw, Chick Webb
Be-Bop - Diz, Miles, Bird, Powell, George Shearing
Cool Jazz - Miles (Again), Bill Evans, Coltrane, Dexter Gordon
Avant-Garde - Ornette Coleman, Coltrane,
Acid Jazz - Jack McDuff, anything from "Bitches Brew", "Sketches of Spain", "Files De Kiliminjaro"
Fusion - Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Steps Ahead, Mike Stern,
Smooth Jazz - Jeff Lorber, Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin, Chris Botti

And about 34,000 others.

But that's the fun part!!!

JimZaroulis writes:
You know, by latching on with Sco (or him latching on with them), bands like MMW and Soulive have definately etched themselves a spot in the jazz cycle. Very "neo-bop" and accented with the funk/fusion thing (Herbie, Billy Cobham, etc)

Yeah, I know, just wanted to put a head's up out there for the newbies. Not only is G's music bad, it's decidedly *not* jazz. Every read Metheny's rant on Kenny G? It's classic: allaboutjazz.com/articles/arti...

wow pat metheney has some issues. sure kenny g sucks. but pat metheney is a jelous, pompus jack hole. i dont care for his music at all, even before he let me know how highly evolved it is, and that i must be a moron for not accepting his greatness.

Pat Metheney should join Lowellrocks, he'd do well here.

This is not a joke.

The TOP selling jazz saxophone players EVER is Kenny G.

I'm sure Kenny can swing if he had to, and he definately has the chops, but he chose a different avenue and made (makes) ALOT of money. That Metheny interview was in bad taste, and I'm sure alot of the 'cats' feel the same way, and I did lose a little respect for him after that article, but purists are purists, and artists are artists.

We only have 12 notes to work with, whether it's jazz, rock, pop, classical, or country. Why is one any better, easier, harder, confusing than the other?

When someone says "I don't like jazz, because I don't understand it." I don't even bother having the conversation, because it's not "jazz" that they don't understand, it's obviously "music" that they don't understand. Music is a language like English, Greek or Urdu. The more you use it, the better you'll be able to converse.
