You can't count all the great songs that used variants off his initial groove. Here are a few that come to mind immediately:

Hush -- Deep Purple
She's the One -- Bruce Springsteen
Who Do You Love? -- George Thorogood
Willie and the Hand Jive -- CCR

I saw him in 1979. He opened for the Clash at the Harvard Square Theater . It was the Clash's first appearance in the USA. I sat in the second row.

I remember that during a prolonged version of "Who Do You Love" during Bo Diddley's set, Bo stood there with that square guitar he played and his sunglasses on and focused his will on me to get me into the audience participation groove with the crowd because he could see it bored me. I was a staunch prog rock and jazz fusion guy at the time. It was a strange experience in that all the hubbub—the music, the crowd noise—all seemed to fade away until all that was left was this weird exchange between me and this rock n' roll icon standing there with his guitar on staring at me, telepathically saying, "C'mon man....get into it!....What's wrong with you?" I wouldn't, couldn't budge. It was as if it was occurring in a vacuum.

The opening band (the first of the three) was a thin, paltry contrived imitation of a "punk band".

Then the Clash came on and absolutely blew everyone away. I'll never forget their energy and how big they sounded. Another thing I'll never forget was the marked difference between the three bands in terms of energy and authenticity.

It really was a memorable concert all the way around.

Wow, that's a shame.
I rebuilt a couple of really old amps for him in '06. He was a funny guy.
