"Big Wreck" for beginners.

Now that we can embed videos here, I can actually post CLIPS instead of just ranting about how great these guys were. Local Boston band that only lasted a couple of albums.

Here's a few vids to give a taste.
IMHO: Pure genius.

Gotta give it up for Big Wreck. Awesome band. Check out Thornley as well. Ian's band post-Big Wreck.

One Louder - I bought "THORNLEY" - and it's "good"... but not even close to the sound Big Wreck had. I misst that soupy, saucy, drippy groove... that blend of musicians. It's just not as good IMHO.

Thornley is good. Good songwriting. Big Wreck kicks ass. Pleasure and the Greed is way under rated.

ACME Music Trio writes:
Yeah - I went-back and listened to THORNLEY. It's 'pretty good' to me, but far from what Big Wreck was.

Bump - to expose others to the genius that Big Wreck was.

I know it's said about a lot of bands, but these guys should-have been HUGE...! It has EVERYTHING a great rock band needs.

Such a shame.

Rob Keeler
Rob Keeler writes:
I was just playing The Oaf the other day. The only problem wth Big Wreck is you need about 12 guitars to play a set of Big Wreck tunes. Every damn song is in a different tuning.
5/21/2008 10:35:19 AM
ThatGuy
ThatGuy writes:
Yep - apparently, he backed-off the multiple tunings a bit on the second album. It was getting ridiculous to "gig" with all those guitars. Think of all the different tunings - and then BACKUP guitars for most of 'em.

A guitar tech's nightmare, I would think.

Rob Keeler
Rob Keeler writes:
Another note.......they are a Boston band per se.

Ian met the band at Berklee but didn't go there very long. I would actually consider them to be a Canadian band.

It's the same scenario with Dream Theater except they are a NY band.

ThatGuy writes:
Well... either way, I wish I was aware of them when they practically had a residency at (I think it was) Bill's Bar. I'd have loved to have caught them live in a small venue.

I was lucky enough to see Big Wreck twice. They killed both times. This thread inspired to me to learn a couple of tunes today (The Oaf, and Easy Come).

Rob - I would gig that song with you ANY DAY OF THE WEEK! I would even do a one-off gig of all Big Wreck covers. :)

Not saying I can play those saucy, drippy, soupy, incredible laid-back grooves he plays. Heheheh...

ThatGuy
ThatGuy writes:
Hmmm... a one-off LR.com-based gig of Big Wreck tunes. Rob, how many guitars do you have...? You'd need at least a dozen to cover both albums. And a banjo... you got a banjo...? :)

Man, that'd be a fun night (well, for ME it would be).

ACME Music Trio
ACME Music Trio writes:
Don't tease me like that. :)
Things we'd need: singer that sounds like Chris Cornell meets... well, meets Ian Thornley. 8 guitar players to create that "wall o' guitars" sound on the albums... Heheheh...

But seriously, there'd need to be vocals from everyone. It really WOULD be a fun gig.

After listening to more tunes today - such a gig would require a keyboard player. Man, some of these tunes are frickin' BRILLIANT.

Besides... getting together to learn a bunch o' "cover" tunes (even if it IS Big Wreck) takes a time commitment ... which is cool & all...

But where on earth would/could you book it and who in their right mind (except for maybe 5-6 Big Wreck fans) would show up...?

:)

Trust me... I'd have a BLAST nailing that music. Not sure it's a gigable endeavor, but man... it'd be fun.

a gig of all big wreck tunes would be frickin' awesome!! Definitely would have to find a place large enough to accommodate that many players and their equipment!
5/25/2008 11:13:57 AM
ThatGuy
ThatGuy writes:
After listening to both albums thoroughly this weekend, I have come to the conclusion that as much "fun" as it would be to play Big Wreck tunes... I don't think I would do it justice.

Not only would *I* not do it justice, but I would also have super-high expectations of myself and everyone else in the project to "sound like the album" without a lot of rehearsal.

I think my *frustration factor* would outweigh my enjoyment. Just being honest. I am super-critical of my abilities and would not want to "gig" any material that I was not doing justice to.

I know - it was *my* idea too. Get a good drummer to fill that role and I'll come SEE the show. :) Heheheh...
