Is it for money or because you have a talent?
Do you play to earn a living?
Do you play to enhance the living you already earn?
Or do you play because you have a talent at entertaining?
Seriously, if you have a day job and you gig because you just don't make enough to make ends meet, then maybe (*maybe*) you need to look at the way you live!
I rarely see the guys who actually have music careers and do it for a living.... they never complain about how many gigs they have or the money they make... all they do is hustle to get the next gig.
If you play gigs or teach or do something musical to make the mortgage payment, then you have every right in the world to complain about the gig money or lack thereof....
The rest of us should just be thankful we can actually play gigs and that there are places where we can play and use our talent.
If you are going to be bitter about how it ain't like it was in the 70's or 80's, how bitter are you going to be when there is no one interested in hearing you play at ALL?
4/4/2008 1:49:45 PM
I "p-l-a-y"
IT IS FUN
4/4/2008 1:58:59 PM
I dig it Jim, I play for the fun, and if I get paid, that's great too.
4/4/2008 1:59:50 PM
I do it to bless the world with my supernatual talent and stunning good looks.
you can't put a price on that.
or maybe it was because i like to drink beers and play my geetar.
I can't rememebre which.
wait what was the question again? i've been sniffing glue all day.
4/4/2008 2:00:50 PM
is there a lesson in this thread that i missed?
4/4/2008 2:01:19 PM
I don't play for either.
I jumped that ship a long time ago.
Now I play for no money and I could argue with you about having any talent to entertain. But I do entertain myself for the most part.
I just love talking into a microphone. I even have conversations if I'm in a band through the microphone in between songs.
I just love me. I can't help it. And eventually as soon as enough people get enough of me on stage. They will learn to love me too.
What's not to love about me? :-)
I do for the Love.
4/4/2008 2:01:29 PM
i am getting the feeling that stunt thinks i should start paying my mortgage or something.
4/4/2008 2:01:42 PM
I play because I find it rewarding to gripe about how much it sucks to play
4/4/2008 2:01:56 PM
or be more thankful.
4/4/2008 2:01:59 PM
F*kn smoking ban
4/4/2008 2:02:07 PM
I don't pay my mortgage
I play it
like a f*cking drum
4/4/2008 2:03:05 PM
real f*cking bad
4/4/2008 2:03:18 PM
100,,i'm not really bitter,,just downtrodden to see where the business ended up. y'know,,it gets harder as u get older. i ain't a youngin' anymore. and to play for what i was making 6 or 7 yrs ago,,just does'nt sit right. i know the sentiment of some of the veterans would be just like mine.
4/4/2008 2:03:18 PM
and by bad I mean poorly
4/4/2008 2:03:32 PM
i find that musicians have WAY more credibility on this site, i play so i can tell non-musicians like barbie to re think her position and learn an instrument or pipe down.
4/4/2008 2:04:41 PM
also, its 1/2 inch more fun than shootin varmin for fun.
4/4/2008 2:05:04 PM
Yup, you're right, Rawg.
But what do I know.
4/4/2008 2:05:16 PM
you don't know how to play an instrument. pipe down.
4/4/2008 2:08:45 PM
I know I know, my opinion's worth jack.
4/4/2008 2:09:26 PM
I play to up the supply which will hopefully bring down demand
4/4/2008 2:10:02 PM
It's when I DON'T get paid for a gig that poses the problems.
Eh Marc?
Other than that, I'm very happy that my talent has allowed to me to make a career out of music. The fun part is how it can always be better.
4/4/2008 2:10:58 PM
WAIT DID YOU GET STIFFED BY MARC ON A GIG JZ?
i smell a public pissing match and thread go in the shitter body experience.
4/4/2008 2:13:04 PM
This is the worst and most insulting f*cking thread I have ever been on in my entire life bar none
4/4/2008 2:14:11 PM
No.......
Private joke between me and Marc!
Marc and I are very good friends.
4/4/2008 2:14:47 PM
omg,,here we go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4/4/2008 2:14:53 PM
too freakin funny!
4/4/2008 2:15:25 PM
I heard stunt tried to bang my wife and I am absolutely f*cking livid
4/4/2008 2:15:38 PM
Don't blame the bang-er, blame the bang-ee.
4/4/2008 2:16:48 PM
Ever have bangers?
They're this dinner sausage I believe from England and they suck- at least the bastardized version I had at some sh*thole in Worcester sucked
And I didn't say they BANGED
just that he was trying to
and I also didn't say I was livid AT stunt- just that I was livid
really I'm just livid because I had a lot of chinese food at lunch-
the sodium gets me going pretty good
4/4/2008 2:21:52 PM
I'm a hobbyist and it shows.
I don't do it for the money but like the mercenary I am, I do like to make something for my effort even it means paying for gas, my food for the night and guitar strings.
4/4/2008 2:22:15 PM
F-U-N and to earn a bit of money to enhance my fun.
4/4/2008 2:23:37 PM
I do it because I enjoy it, and get paid well. If the pay wasn't there, I wouldn't do it...it's still a job.
4/4/2008 2:25:25 PM
Ah, is that Catherine Bell?
She would be fun indeed.
4/4/2008 2:26:04 PM
I subscribe to Musician of Fortune magazine, and i place ads selling my services as a "hired gun" if you will.
Every man has his price.
4/4/2008 2:40:51 PM

Is it for money or talent? I'd have to say for both. It's what I do. It's what I've always done.
I'm just frustrated. Frustrated that my next door neighbor can make a fantastic living throwing a baseball for a living doing what he loves to do. Yet, I've always played a mean bass guitar and nobody really gives a shit. I'm no "weekend warrior" either. Is it any more or less important than throwing a ball around? The support network that exists for something like sports does not exist for music.
A big and important reason that people thrive and flourish in music is that they are given the opportunity and support to create. Do you think that The Beatles would have gone as far as they did without the endorsement and support of EMI Studios and the creative input of George Martin? (as an example)
I've been through the original/artist phase where all I did for years was record and play hi-profile gigs in NYC, Boston, colleges and live radio broadcasts, not really making a dime. In essence, "paying to play". As hard as I worked at it, I probably didn't put in as much as I should have. Or maybe it was all a matter of timing and that I was never heard or "picked-up" by the right person or group that understood or fit-in best with my style.
After tiring of that, I decided to pick-up where I'd left off in the 70s', having fun playing covers and making few bucks. There were times when we were doing exceptionally well. It rarely-if ever lasts though.
Let's just put it this way: I was doing well-enough with with it that I was earning a living doing it and working a shitty day job at the same time. I can still tear it up good, but it doesn't matter. It's really not important in the scheme of things.
I'm lucky that I can still even hear at all, never mind anyone else "hearing" me.
Although, that's not what really bothers me. There are things that I'd rather not even get into on this forum.....in public. If you'd like I could provide an illustration or two but I'd rather not.
4/4/2008 2:41:53 PM
I've actually have never gotten payed to play a gig.
But I did get paid to load, unload, setup, operated, pack up, load again, and unload again sometimes not until the next day.
That's what I got paid for. The Grunt work.
Although there were others I played with that did get paid just for showing up and playing.
Hmm? I guess I'm not that bright after all. :-(
4/4/2008 2:43:57 PM
Yeah...but you got a bigger cut!
4/4/2008 2:46:37 PM
I like to roll drunks at the end of the night
4/4/2008 2:47:57 PM
juice,,i was a roadie too ,,for 3 yrs. glad i did it for all that i learned!
4/4/2008 2:48:38 PM
Chip, ya have to get Rawg back into his car somehow, right?
4/4/2008 2:48:45 PM
I wish I got a bigger cut swanee. We just reached that platuea to make a little extra to start putting back into equipment operating expences when.... we'll you remember what happened. Typical band divorce.
4/4/2008 2:50:05 PM
LOL ski.....
I wasn't a roadie.
4/4/2008 2:53:48 PM
I worked for a concert promoter for a few years. Worked like an Egyptian slave. Never worked harder in my life.
4/4/2008 2:57:52 PM
I started out playing for fun and just because I love music so much.
Then I did it because it made it easier to laid.
Then I did it because I loved to party every night.
Then I did it for a long time strictly for money.
Then I started to get old.
Then I got sick of all the bullshit and went from a large 10 pc band to 8 to 7 to 6 then 5 then 3 then 2 then solo gigs. Now I stay home and play with myself, and wonder where my life went and what the hell I'm gonna do with the rest of it.
But I had my fun.
4/4/2008 3:02:02 PM
I play in a band for the chicks.
4/4/2008 3:02:30 PM
And now I don't gig at all.
4/4/2008 3:02:44 PM
Since I met Mat Fedters in the bathroom at Princeton Station. I'm afraid to be in clubs any more.
4/4/2008 3:03:46 PM
I try and get dudes
4/4/2008 3:07:13 PM
Ken, you've been traumatized....
4/4/2008 3:11:56 PM
Kenny did you notice they had to redo the bathroom?
4/4/2008 3:12:27 PM
It's not like the good old days.
4/4/2008 3:12:52 PM
Last time I try to post a serious conversation.
4/4/2008 3:17:07 PM
that's what they all say.
4/4/2008 3:23:31 PM

It's a moving target for some of us... not only that, at any point it can have multiple answers.
I "have" played for MANY reasons. I've been in crappy bands and really good bands. Got paid a LOT of money and worked for free. Had a LOT of fun and been miserable in some bands.
I play because I can. I gig because it's extra income and fun. Fun is not enough (for me). If BIG 80's took a pay-cut and made 1/2 what we make now... I'd respectfully bow-out.
I do not feel that everyone nor anyone should think like me, but I value my time. Even if I ENJOY doing it, my time and talents are worth money. I have been jaded from years of being a freelancer. It took me a while to realize that just because I enjoyed something and it came easy to me, doesn't mean it should be given-away frivolously. I used to practically "give" my time away. Now, I have no problem charging $125/hr for high-level design.
With music, it's similar. I love to play and I love to see people enjoy my/our performance... but there better be a check at the end of the night. (obviously the occasional "benefit" excluded)
I am not a "true musician" like a lot of you -- those that are writers, those that just "have music in them", those that will play until their last breath... to me, it's a fun way to spend some time, but I do not "need" music in my life like a lot of people... more specifically, I do not need to "GIG".
I do it because it's fun and pays well.
4/4/2008 3:38:38 PM

CrazyCat, I think if you look at the ratio of pro ball players and all the folks who never get anywhere, vs. the same phenomenon in music, I'll bet the ratios are even more stacked against you for athletics than music. (My theory is based on the fact that I think more people play sports than music.)
And music doesn't have the same phenomenon where if you blow out your knee as a high school junior, you might as well just hang it up. There are carpal tunnel and other repetitive motion stress injuries, but I'm sure they're not as common a career killer as injuries in sports.
I remember reading some inner city preacher talking about how kids put so much of their energy into making it to the NBA when they'd almost certainly be just as well off probability-wise buying lottery tickets. The odds are probably longer for making it in sports.
And if you're talking about someone like Glavin, the odds of a baseball player coming out of New England are even worse. The scouts rarely get out of the south, and often never leave Texas and Florida.
4/4/2008 3:38:51 PM
i think there are more 'professional' musicians out there than 'professional' athletes.
maybe? i wonder, if you extend that out to semi pro players, and weekend warriors, what the numbers really are.
4/4/2008 3:41:42 PM
Oh, back to the question at hand: I play music because it's something I really enjoy doing and I'd like to think I've gotten at least competent at it. The latter statement is intended to be an exercise in relativity, not an attempt to fish for compliments. ;-)
The money part is the most complex thing for me, as I don't want to be stealing work off of people who do this for a living, but the weird stuff I play isn't going to get me big bucks anyway. Also, as we've discussed previously, the jobs I typically go for are not the kinds of things that anyone else is going to get rich off of anyway. I'm OK so long as everyone's in the same boat (and by everyone, I mean the club owners, other players, etc.) in terms of what's there to be had.
4/4/2008 3:43:41 PM
100,,,,,these guys are all commenting on my depressing thread of 2 hrs ago. that got the ball rolling. what u said,,,i have to agree with! i understand what u are saying.
ken,,u never cease to amuse. i've learned my lesson. my job on this website is to complain about the old days. i have some other benefactors who support me. i know my role.
when everyone takes over,,,,,,u gotta admit,,it is hilarious. y'know,,i don't feel so bad about my wasted life right now. hell,,i'm not even stoned but i feel like i am.
these website comedians are just sitting there waiting for me to spill my guts! i do it everytime. i know my role. and after they get done with me,,i don't feel so bad about my haircut! so i pretend i am the one with the education. and they pretend they are on snl. freakin hilarious.
4/4/2008 3:47:19 PM
I don't remember the exact numbers, but I think I remember reading at one point that for every single person in the Major Leagues, there are 10,000 others who seriously thought about making that their career but never made it to MLB.
But I do think that the baseball numbers were cited as the worst example. But basketball's got to be pretty bad too.
When I was saying more athletes vs. musicians, I was thinking about kids starting in like Little League and Pee Wee hockey. I'm thinking that the numbers of kids who start in sports is way larger than those who start in music. (But that's just my own observations, not supported by any hard numbers or scientific studies or Gallup polls or anything like that.)
4/4/2008 3:48:08 PM
every belushi needs an akroyd ski!
4/4/2008 3:50:14 PM

4/4/2008 3:54:14 PM
ski I'm with you-
bust out the whipits and valium
lets play some greatful dead
4/4/2008 3:58:12 PM
I don't think it's fair to lump all pro's together like it seems to be stated.
At one time back like in the days of Babe Ruth pro players were not paid like they are today. They weren't considered extremley wealthy like they are today.
The equivelnt to music is much harder to define because the so called pro performers that play the nightly gigs in club are technically poor compared to major recording artists like Bruce Springsteen who last year signed a 100 million dollar recording contract. Should he be retired?
Nightly gigging isn't something ball players can do to make a so called profresional living at it. Unless you lump in coaches or facilities.
4/4/2008 4:00:02 PM
Well Demo, I tried........
There's a lot of truth to that Arte.
Yes, countless people are blown away with crippling sports-related injuries well before they're even out of high school. Then there are the vast numbers that never get beyond college, minor league, triple A or farm teams.
I guess it's just the successful ones that stand out and get all the attention.
Tom Glavine was a rare exception. The LA Kings were at his doorstep to sign him for hockey along with the Braves for baseball—right out of high school!
It's gonna be a long weekend SKI!!
milhouse......butt trumpet!!! Love it!!
Love the new Avatar Chippa! It's like the mountain goat from Easter Island. Sort of like a combination of a goat and a yeti.
4/4/2008 4:09:02 PM
I love Bruce Springsteen
4/4/2008 4:10:41 PM
I play because I love it. My money goes back into the band for gear or swag, so it's definately not an income boost for me.
I wish it was.....But I do it because I love the attention!!
......maybe I shouldn't say that..especially here :)
4/4/2008 4:10:44 PM
nah,,chip,,,the dead were never my scene. switch it to the allman bros. and we've got a deal!
4/4/2008 4:10:59 PM
I've been gigging since June 1972. I keep doing it because it's all I ever really wanted to do. At first I wanted to be famous. Then I wanted to be free. I hated working a corporate job, having to get up early and prostitute my time for someone else's benefit.
Now I keep doing it because I just can't imagine stopping. Like I said, it's all I've every really wanted to do. And now, I do it for the applause. There's not much money in it and I'll never get even well-known, much less famous, but I love the feeling I get when the audience likes us. It's a drug and I'm hooked.
4/4/2008 4:11:18 PM
dara,,,,,99% of the musicians i know,,do it for the same reason. hell,,it's supposed to be show business,,,,not confession.
4/4/2008 4:14:05 PM
I hear ya Wayno!!
4/4/2008 4:14:31 PM
I play because I enjoy it....however I make no money and have no talent. I'm, as you may say, S.O.L.
YO
WOW, that's me "Sh*t Oughta Luck - vocals" hahahahahahaha I kill me.
4/4/2008 4:14:34 PM
SKI sums it as well.......
4/4/2008 4:17:08 PM
I do it for the connection that is made when a handful of good musicians lock in and you get that feeling that something cool is happening. All of the other stuff, crowd appreciation, money, comradery, etc. are just the results of it being good.
4/4/2008 4:18:01 PM
i noticed i get a lot of hands when i sing(to the back of my head). but i've learned to accept it. i realize i am something special. i was put on this earth to play 60 and 70's covers. i am not like your common plebian. i am a wonderful person with killa looks. i play in a band. i'm different than you. can't u see this??? there,,i've finally said how i really feel about myself. i'm cleansed! plus,,at 54,,i can still get into my jeans. there,,take that,,,all u non believers!
4/4/2008 4:21:57 PM
Riff - I'd agree with that... but again, every day is different. a year and a half ago, I was playing in 6 bands... Two primary: AMT & BIG 80s... and I Sub'ed with 4 others... actually more if you consider the one-off gigs here & there.
And some of those sub' gigs were STRICTLY for the money. No love for the required music (be it wedding or GB). And a lot of the sub-work was uninspiring due to the venue or cause. Me playing with (almost) pencils on the kit to be as quiet as possible on some, etc. The PURPOSE of those gigs to me AT THAT TIME, were to pay the bills.
Now, with a different job... I need to be more selective with how I spend my time. The gigs MUST be good-sounding, good personalities, good songs, good pay... and that may all change if I were to lose my job in a month or a year. Who knows...? every gig is different to me. Some gigs I do for the $$$ - some for the experience... no right or wrong. :)
4/4/2008 4:28:12 PM
ya,,riff,,but it's kinda hard to lock in every nite. sometimes u hit a home run,,sometimes u pop up. great when it does happen but in the end,,,,,,,,SHOW ME THE MONEY!
4/4/2008 4:31:42 PM
I HATE THIS F*CKING THREAD
4/4/2008 4:49:27 PM
Ski, I still get into my jeans. They're just bigger than they used to be. ;-)
I'm with Riff. My main motivation is to play good music with good musicians who are good people as well. When any of those three things aren't there, it typically doesn't last for me.
And when the band's "on" that's what makes it fun. It's rare when the audience doesn't appreciate that, so like he said, they come along for the ride when the waves are good.
4/4/2008 4:49:48 PM
I've come full circle and I'm once again in it for the same reason as when I started 25 years ago.
To meet chicks.
4/4/2008 4:52:51 PM
I thought you were going to say the fried food
4/4/2008 4:57:25 PM
arte,,mine are bigger too.
swann man,,,with that rap u got,,u should'nt have to play 1-4-5!
4/4/2008 4:57:59 PM
i'm in bands so i can skim a few bucks off the other guys in the band pay and tell them that the owner shorted us.
solo gigs are not lucrative like that.
4/4/2008 5:21:02 PM
I do it for the chicks......at least that's what I keep tellin my wife!
4/4/2008 6:02:45 PM
Well, I do like to see the young girls. I may be too old to play the game, but I still enjoy seeing beautiful women. I love seeing a beautiful woman singing, or dancing, or just moving. That's what it's all about, after all.
4/4/2008 6:27:18 PM
It has always been about beautiful girls, right?
4/4/2008 6:28:42 PM
Ski, you can have your bad nights. When I get the opportunity to play I play. Swanee and Wayne's honesty is commendable. That too comes with the territory!
4/4/2008 7:48:21 PM
Wayne,
I've only seen you play once and I'm looking forward to seeing you again, I may not be a sexy girl dancing to your gig, but you'll have one fellow blues player who agrees and understands where your coming from and what it's all about and listen with appreciation and respect for your talent and years of dedication. I play for for the love of the music and the rare moments when it returns the favor.
4/4/2008 7:59:48 PM
Do what you love.... Period! If you love it, you'll be good at it, and you'll make money!
4/4/2008 8:02:07 PM
Well, thank you! We'll be at Sangria's tomorrow night, so come on out, and sit in if you feel like it. We've always encouraged our LR friends to play music with us. At the very least come up and say hello. We'll be very happy that you did.
4/4/2008 9:07:26 PM
I'm not playing out at the the moment, but when I do it will not be for the money.
4/6/2008 12:47:42 PM
We have fun and if we get paid to do it, even better.
Recently we have been on a string of benefits, hell we even considered be coming "Charity Case" the band. but if it's the one way we can give back to those not as lucky as all of us, how can it be any better?
4/6/2008 10:12:30 PM
I play for money and fun. Whether my hopes of making it big happen or not, I damn well am going to try and continue to do so. I would love to make big bucks doing music for a living rather than being the corporate chick I have been doing for years. Hell Yeah....I'm honest.
4/8/2008 8:04:51 AM
I know plenty of people who do music only and they make a decent living. No more or less than you'd make working a regular day job. As long as you're digging it then all the power to ya.
Music for me is only a release nothing more. I do really enjoy it though!
Later this month I'm jamming with the original 4 members of the Rock Daddys. Myself, Pop Daddy (who is stll with me in the band) Ho Daddy and CPA. We're going to jam on Rock only til we drop! And it's for nothing else other than the pure pleasure of playing together!
