Geezers Who Are Still Good, and Others Who Should Go Bye Bye

Kennium
Kennium writes:
There are musicians who have been putting out great music for decades, - even though they may be geezers, they're still good. They can still play and sing and put on a decent show...
There's also a few who are just embarrassingly awful.
Your list please.

Who should hang it up;
Eric Burdon. When he performed a couple of years ago at Boarding House Park his singing has turned to out-of-tune screaming. The band is good but they need to tell him that it's time. It's a shame because I saw him 7 years ago at the same venue and he was good. And he was no spring chicken then.

Who should stay;
I thought the movie "Heart of Gold" Neil Young's latest show at The Ryman was very nostalgic and revealed Neil's love of singing and performing the great songs that he has given us. He still rocks and rolls!

Check this out however....I Love Elvis!!!

Arte K writes:
Dave Mason still puts on a great show.

BB King, while a little Vegas-y for blues, still can play and sing quite well for being in his 80s, so he should keep going.

I think it's been time for the Stones to retire for a couple decades now, but they're sure as heck not going to listen to that kind of talk while they can still fill out arenas all summer long.

Arte I was about to post the other way...

I saw them in Vegas two years ago and was admittedly completely incoherent for the show- but I thought they were great

I certainly haven't bought a record they've put out since 1985, but I enjoyed the show

Kennium writes:
Jeff Beck is about a thousand and he can still play rings around most guitar shredders of today.
The band Tower Of Power may be outdated, but they are truly the tightest band I have ever seen live. Incredible musicianship.

I saw James Cotton a while back. He should quit trying to sing. He can still blow a mean harp, but his voice is gone. That's kind of sad.

BEEF writes:
Johnny Winter was a shadow of his former self but was still better than a lot of whats happening.
Robin Trower plays as good if not better than he did back in the day.

Captain Morgan
Captain Morgan writes:
I think the idea of an artist hanging it up because of age is just silly.

There is something to said for aging gracefully though. Sometimes I wish someone would tell an artist to stop dressing, and grooming as if it was 1968.

I saw the Stones a few years ago, and they were outstanding!

If Rod Stewart releases another album of "the great American Songbook" I'm gonna puke all over the place. I don't think his voice lends itself to that stuff at all! Maybe a classic blues album, or classic hillbilly or something, but no more of those jazz standards.

Musicians older than me that should keep going:
Kim Simmonds (Savoy Brown)
Rick Derringer
Eric Clapton
Paul McCartney
Todd Rundgren
Dave Mason
Robin Trower (3 more days!)
Pat Travers
Donald Fagan/Walter Becker
BB King

Should probably hang it up:
Maria Muldaur
Sleepy LaBeef
Leslie West
Jimmy Page
Eddie Van Halen
Axl Rose
David Crosby

Ronin
Ronin writes:
Rush is still incredible. Last time I saw them (3 years ago), Geddy could still hit the high notes. Looking forward to their show in July.

The Stones should definitely hang it up. Their performance at the Superbowl two years ago was brutal.

Def Leppard may soon be on my hang it up list. I've heard Joe Elliot's voice is gone and we see them next month in Manchester so I'll know for sure.

Is Fleetwood Mac really touring with Sheryl Crow filling in for Christine McVie? If so, they should hang it up too.

Sorry Chippa, but judging from the recent photos that I've seen, Eddie looks like he's about ready to croak anyway, plus it seems pretty evident that he's more than a bit difficult to work with.

As for me, I never should have started in the first place...

Hanging it up because of age should not be an issue.

Dave Brubeck swings like he was 30 (he's in his late 80's)
Marian McPartland plays Harlem Stride like no one eise (she's 84)
Elvin Jones hit harder than anyone (he died, but was still doing it at age 80)

I saw Wayne Newton 7 years ago in Vegas and his voice sounded like he was gargling with thumb tacks. He should hang it up.

Oh yeah, Phil Collins may also want to hang it up. Sad to hear what his voice has become...

Neil Young can't sing... There, I said it.

He can't play lead guitar either. Not only should he hand it up, he should have never unhung it to begin with.

Ok he did write a few good tunes.

Stones, PU they definitly need to vacate the stage. It's like dancing skeletons that smoke.

Ozzy should keep away from microphones from here on. Between him and Joe Elliot all of the vocal effect processors in the world are all taken.

Something to consider, if there pros are past their prime and not good any more where does that leave us weekend hackers? As bad as they are their still better than we are.

All kidding aside if someone can still fill an arena or auditorium at $200 a seat and sound 5% of what they once were than all the power to them. Let them play forever.

I actually met Rick Derringer and was amazed at how versatile he is. He not only is a great rock guitarist, but also is quite accomplished at jazz, fusion, ragtime, and pretty much any style you can name. Plus he's a very friendly, open person who's happy to talk to you one on one. I came away really liking him as a person, and very impressed with his skills on both guitar and vocals.

In My Soul
In My Soul writes:
Ya know I thought that once when I saw BB king at the Lowell auditorium a couple of years ago cause he sat in a chair and really didn’t play much and it was nothing like what I expecting from all the years of listening to CD’s. I actually started to get aggravated cause he was only singing and not really playing, it was very disappointing and then it hit about half the way thru that who the hell am I to feel this way about a man that dedicated his life to the blues and still up there in spite it all, and I realized that it’s all good and had a sort of respect from where he was coming from. After that I felt what he was playing instead of listening and I realized something that night. If he had hung the guitar in lieu of still playing out, I would not have had a read between the lines.

Morganic
Morganic writes:
BB has diabetes and is probably too old to keep doing this sort of thing, but he loves it too much to quit. So, he keeps gigging, most every night of the year, and people keep coming out to hear him tell his stories and to hear Lucille chime in every now and then.

I saw him in 1974 with Bobby Blue Bland and he was a classic, at the top of his game. He had the audience in the palm of his hand.

Arte K
Arte K writes:
Wow, I saw BB at the Auditorium a few years back and he still played a ton of leads. Maybe things are progressing badly for him.

My 15 year old said the other day that he wants to see him while he's still alive, so I have at least one more time to go see him.

Amazing voice still.

I saw Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson a few years ago and thought that he was pretty much done. Then I saw him about a year later and he was much better. I mentioned it to one of his roadies and they said, "Yeah, a new kidney will do that for you."

Summer before last I worked at the Blues 'n Brews and he was very lively and put on a helluva show.

Has anyone heard the new Joe Jackson song.... he was never one of my favorites, but wow, put me right back in high school. It's really good and sounds like "back in the day" Joe jackson

Definitely time for Def Leppard to go.... the singer sounds like the guy that does the daibetes commercials for geezers!

.... and riffdaddy, did you say that Neil Young should go because he can't sing and can't play lead?

luckily, he learned to write music that fit what he could do (much like Bob Dylan) and both can still do that very well
