Beatles ... American Idol ...
Did you see that?
To me, that said all there is to say about not getting it.
3/11/2008 10:59:15 PM
I didn't see it. Can you elaborate on your position (was it good,.. bad,...???)
3/11/2008 11:56:04 PM
I was on the computer when it was on and I must say most of it was pretty bad-
I liked the tune that black dude did early on with the banjos and such- maybe because I didn't recognize the tune (Not a big beatles guy, me) but I will say just about everything else was pretty bastardized-
and it got bastardized and then you had to listen to people tell a f*cking sixteen year old girl or whoever that she was really 'taking hold of the music and making it her own' or some other load of horse pucky.
I have Syesha in the pool- she seemed as good as anybody els up there
Go Syesha
I miss football and I'm not focused enough to gamble hockey or baseball
3/12/2008 12:27:30 AM
What I was doing primarily during idol was watching the guitar videos that riff posted- watch them if you can I have a funny feeling they're going to get taken down after a piece
holy sh*t those were hilarious, to the point where my wife was reminding me to breathe
3/12/2008 12:29:07 AM
That was pretty horrible.
The Beatles songs are sacred and they got mangled, for the most part.
That being said, I love the dreadlock kid.
3/12/2008 12:59:21 AM
You'd have to go to the meat department to see that kind of butchery. That version of Love Me Do was so atrocious it gave me shingles.
3/12/2008 8:07:40 AM
Hold on there, people!... Most all of it did suck, but that blond chick's version of Let It Be was pretty good. She didn't "butcher" that.
3/12/2008 8:23:12 AM
al, i was just about to say that!!
i watched the whole show just because it was beatles night
and,man, OUCH!
most of them KILLED the songs!!
but brooke (the blonde one) i thought did a good job on let it be... she played piano, kept true to the original tune..she really didn't mess with it very much...
that chick kristy who tried to "country" the beatles tune was just painful to listen to
3/12/2008 8:28:59 AM
eight days a week??country?? nope! didn't work
david's "we can work it out" was horrendous...forgot the words, off key in parts, off beat...
i hope sir paul wasn't watching!
3/12/2008 8:33:08 AM
Those two performances you mention, Dot, had me curled up in the fetal position on the floor with a pillow over each ear!
3/12/2008 8:44:04 AM
I'm glad I didn't see this then.
3/12/2008 9:02:24 AM
Did you see that guy crooning Across The Universe?
Ya don't croon that song.
3/12/2008 9:57:55 AM
No one should cover Beatles songs. Ever. Doesn't matter who you are, or how famous or wonderful you may be. Don't cover Beatles songs. It's just wrong.
3/12/2008 10:00:12 AM
The BeeGees and Frampton were at the top of the world and they covered a bunch of Beatles songs and look what happened. Let that be a lesson to all.
3/12/2008 10:02:32 AM
Generally I would agree, but then I think of Joe Cocker's version of I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends.
But that's such a drastically different version...it's almost a different song from the original.
3/12/2008 10:14:32 AM
Tiffany had a good run
3/12/2008 10:16:48 AM
What a bunch a prudes. The Beatles are no more sacred than anyone else. Several of the songs sung last night were actually good. There was definitely some hacking going on though. I felt bad fo the last kid. He's a greqat singer but man he really struggled.
3/12/2008 11:12:16 AM
What a dissapointment...I had been looking forward to this all week and it was sad to see a bunch of young kids so disenfranchised with the Beatles that the last one even forgot the lyrics.
I say dismiss the whole bunch and start fresh.
3/12/2008 11:27:57 AM
Now HOW did I know Riff would come in and tell me my opinion was worth crapola.
3/12/2008 11:36:17 AM
I'm a -huge- Beatle fan. I listen to some Beatles music almost every day and I credit Paul McCartney with moving me to learn to play bass. I don't see any of the music as "sacred" or "shouldn't be covered". I've heard some great covers of Beatles songs over the years. I didn't see the show, so I can't comment on the specific arrangements or performances. But I don't have any objection to Beatle covers on principle
To a lot of younger people, the Fabs are either their parent's music or (gasp) their grandparent's music. There's no reason to expect that they're going to have the same reverence for the Beatles as those of us who grew up with them. It's the same as say Doris Day or Bing Crosby for kids who grew up with Elvis and Buddy Holly on the radio.
.
3/12/2008 11:38:49 AM
"What a bunch a prudes. The Beatles are no more sacred than anyone else."
Crazy talk. Just plan crazy talk.
3/12/2008 11:41:10 AM
"The BeeGees and Frampton were at the top of the world and they covered a bunch of Beatles songs and look what happened. Let that be a lesson to all."
Those were sh*tty covers in a really, really bad movie. Plus, Aerosmith's version of Come Together is really good. Different enough to know it's Aerosmith, but close enough to the orginal as to give the same vibe.
3/12/2008 11:41:15 AM
"It's the same as say Doris Day or Bing Crosby for kids who grew up with Elvis and Buddy Holly on the radio."
More Crazy talk.
3/12/2008 11:42:13 AM
"Now HOW did I know Riff would come in and tell me my opinion was worth crapola."
Can't speak for Riff, of course, but I completely understand your viewpoint.
3/12/2008 11:42:32 AM
BK your opinion isn't crapola, it's your opinion. As mine is mine. I saw a completely different show with a few really good performances. Namely Chikezie, Carly, Brook, and David Cook. The rest were as Simon puts it "forgetable".
3/12/2008 11:51:56 AM
the performers just covered the songs badly...plain and simple...
bad arrangements, forgeting words, weak vocals...that was the problem...
there are some that CAN cover the beatles well.....captain morgan does it well on "beatles night", in my opinion... you have to be careful when you cover "classics"...if you "twist it" too much, it really ruins the song
3/12/2008 11:55:42 AM
Opinions are opinions Don, but being overly dismissive about the Beatles is not a matter of opinion; if fact not only does musical history demand a certain reverence, but so does political and cultural history.
Simply put there has never been group who's made a greater impact on the 21st century across so many planes.
3/12/2008 12:07:36 PM
...and you're right Dot, Beatles or no Beatles there were many more misses than hits last night mostly due to arrangement and performance.
3/12/2008 12:10:00 PM
I felt a little bile come to to the top of my throat when I saw the word "Beatles" and "American Idol" next to each other at the top of this thread.
3/12/2008 12:11:03 PM
Don, then don't call me a prude, just tell me you disagree.
Of course one can copy Beatles well, but what that girl did to Eight Days a Week equals blasphemy. In my opinion, of course.
But what do I know.
3/12/2008 12:11:09 PM
Jimmy me too but then I realized that before time and tide made the Beatles great, they too were American Idols.
3/12/2008 12:14:48 PM
There certainly are kids on that show right now with chops AND they got some of the top pros in the biz backing them up so shame all of them for not giving that catalog of music it's due.
3/12/2008 12:16:44 PM
"But what do I know."
You say this WAY too much.
"they too were American Idols."
You do realize they were from the U.K. right. ;)
3/12/2008 12:18:07 PM
lol, Barbie! When she did that country version of Eight Days a Week, even my dog was looking at the tv (see my avatar) going "WTF?"
3/12/2008 12:18:39 PM
I actually have only watched the show once in it's 6 years (or is it 7?). The night I saw was the girls, I haven't heard any of the guys. So far the one girl who I thought was the best one has already been voted off. The black girl with the afro was the only other one worth listening to.
Are any of the guys any good?
3/12/2008 12:19:44 PM
I do Tom, but I was modifying Idols using American rather than the inverse which is the way it's used by the show
semi colon, dash and ummm, I'm gonna go with a lower case p on this one.
3/12/2008 12:20:50 PM
Anyone can cover a Beatles song. But few can do them justice. The Beatles, I have to admit, will always hold a special sacred place in my heart. Above all other bands I see their songwriting skills as superior. I know some people will laugh at that, so I'll just let them.
Those kids had no real connection to the songs they chose to sing. It's really hard to sing a song well when you aren't feeling it on the inside, and they clearly had no feel for the songs. (with the exception of the girl who played the piano on Let It Be)
3/12/2008 12:21:59 PM
The formula is the same every year Jim, a few ringers and a whole lotta almost rans.
What makes it entertaining is a ringer could have a bad night and there's no do-overs.
3/12/2008 12:23:05 PM
Well said Ken, especially the part about the one young lady who sang Let it Be, you could see her connect with the music.
3/12/2008 12:25:03 PM
american idol is crapola.
riff, are you sayin the beatles can't hit a curveball?
i part ways, (though share sentiments) with Melvern with respect to covering the beatles - it is not blashemy, it's required. you can't be a musician if you haven't drank from the cup.
that said, joe cocker, aerosmith etc. have butchered beatles songs - i can't listen to their versions. but i applaude thier efforts.
3/12/2008 12:25:21 PM
Ken, Let It Be is, without a doubt, my favorite Beatles tune of all time! If she f*ckd that up, I would have blown both barrels of my 12 guage through my television! She did OK, though.
3/12/2008 12:28:43 PM
American Idol is crap but my when I first got separated and moved in with my brother 3 years ago he watched it and after he died it was like legacy TV for me.
That being said, if I'm not home when it's on (which is most times) I don't DVR or tape it.
3/12/2008 12:30:09 PM
i watch plenty of things that are crap, so by no means do i put down anyone for whittling time and life for watching this particular brand of crapola. i said that, just to make it clear that while it happens to be music, what happens on their is musically irrelevant in my book.
Personally i prefer America's Next Top Model and Project Runway.
Coicidentally, they both have as much relavance musically as American Idol.
Which is to say.... NONE!
3/12/2008 12:35:00 PM
This is the way I look at it...there is a lot of crap on TV. An immeasurable amount. I could be sitting there watching a sitcom of a fat guy married to a hot girl (pick one, there are a few), or I could be watching something remotely music-related and somewhat entertaining. Enter AI.
But what do I know.
Dog, that's my new parting line, to be used to humble myself in the presence of true LR greatness.
3/12/2008 12:35:18 PM
Hey Versace, grow a pair would ya?
3/12/2008 12:35:52 PM
Aerosmith back in the 80's was the first.
The best was Gov't Mule a couple of years back at the Palladium.
3/12/2008 12:36:31 PM
Prude.
3/12/2008 12:36:46 PM
Wow posted on the wrong thread......... Never mind...........
3/12/2008 12:37:36 PM
That's your opinion.
3/12/2008 12:38:13 PM
Why I oughta...
3/12/2008 12:38:30 PM
"sitcom of a fat guy married to a hot girl"
I call that unreality TV, along with the fact at no matter what their hair/eye color they always spawn blue-eyed blonde kids.
Ever see Raymond? Send the casting directors too a genetics class woulda...or at least write the mailman into the show.
3/12/2008 12:40:33 PM
I only saw the first 4 before I decided to leave my sister's house. I thought the 2 guys (argyle sweater guy and dreadlocked guy) did very well. The 2 girls were "meh".
Now Project Rumway... mil... we have a commonality that i can expound upon for hours. And have. I loved Chris March.
Anyhoo... my favorite Beatles Album:
icanhascheezburger.com/2008/0...
3/12/2008 12:41:06 PM
I'm surprised Ken posted this thread.... He hates musical contests
And I thought it was taboo to talk American Idol on LowellRocks?
3/12/2008 12:41:42 PM
Milhouse said.."i part ways, (though share sentiments) with Melvern with respect to covering the beatles - it is not blashemy, it's required. you can't be a musician if you haven't drank from the cup."
An interesting point for sure. I should also state that when i say that i believe that noone should cover Beatles songs this excludes cover bands and tribute bands. I just don't think you should take a Beatles tune and "make it your own". In my darkest hours this has made me question the true greatness of the songs themselves. I sometimes feel that a "great" song should be great regardless of who sings it or plays it. This is probably a discussion for another thread. I did not see American Idol last night so i have no further comment. sorry for hijacking the thread.
3/12/2008 12:51:17 PM
I thought for sure that the Lily Munster/Janis Joplin hybrid was going to screech her way through Helter Skelter, in which case I was prepared to throw things at my own television.
3/12/2008 12:52:41 PM
Oh well, I'm a true rebel then. HA.
I didn't even know it was taboo to talk American Idol on LowellRocks.
When was that law passed?
Some Doctor Pepper drinker probably.
I don't know why I watch the damned show.
To be honest, it just pisses me off every time I watch it.
So why the hell do I watch it at all?
I can't bear to watch the Grammy's or any award show.
They all make me poop-flingin' monkey mad.
But doing sacrilegious things to Beatle's covers makes me Albert Desalvo crazy.
3/12/2008 12:54:03 PM
"Lily Munster".... ROFLLMAO!
3/12/2008 12:54:47 PM
hmm. In MY hour of darkness, she's standing right in front of me.
I think you have to make it your own. tributes are less interesting to me.
I want the real thing always.
Rich Little musicians have thier place i guess.
Were ringo & george in a cover band when they played a lennon/macca song?
or a tribute band? or just making it thier own.
we are all beatles.
3/12/2008 12:57:09 PM
She DOES look a little like Lily Munster!
3/12/2008 12:57:18 PM
lol Ken...I just remember some of the shitstorms that have started here in past years when A. Idol threads have been posted
3/12/2008 12:57:20 PM
I checked out the American Idol website to try and get on track with everyone. My only comment is that the only thing more wrong than Beatles Covers is white kids with Dredlocks.
3/12/2008 12:58:01 PM
white kids with dreds are thier own thing... Trustafarians.
trustfund+mommy's range rover+hackeysack+dreads
3/12/2008 12:59:49 PM
"we are all Beatles". Wow. maybe that's true. Very good points there Milhouse.
3/12/2008 1:00:13 PM
Shut up, he's cute.
3/12/2008 1:00:19 PM
Ringo and George contributed greatly to the workings of those Beatles songs Think of those fire engine bells on Penny Lane, or the claves on And I Love Her, or George's guitar line on Day Tripper etc... Don't be dissin' my Mopped Topped Messiahs
3/12/2008 1:00:57 PM
I ain't afraid of no shitstorm! I'm havin fun.
3/12/2008 1:02:14 PM
Mel! I've been saying that for YEEEAAAAARRRRSSS! Ooo! They are all over Colorado. Drives me nuts. There is nothing attractive about knotted messy hair.
But the kid did a pretty good job in my opinion. And he has nice skin. Very evenly toned. Well hydrated.
3/12/2008 1:04:02 PM
So are the women on America's Top Model wannabees and only partly as good looking as the REAL models who judge them?
When the saunter, do they make it there own?
Can they replicate the three distinct Victoria's Secret model looks?
1 - I want to F you
2 - I want to kill your dog
3 - I want to F you then kill your dog
www2.victoriassecret.com/comm...
3/12/2008 1:04:16 PM
There is more to modeling than just being pretty Mike.
3/12/2008 1:05:08 PM
I forgot about the International Diplomacy and solving world hunger part Jen...my bad.
3/12/2008 1:06:51 PM
I have a feeling your being serious.
Do they make them do Trig or anything? I'd watch then just to see eyes glaze over w/o the use of psychotropic drugs.
3/12/2008 1:07:57 PM
BK my statement was "What a bunch of prudes" as it was directed to everyone who was complaining about the sacred nature of the Beatles. If they are so sacred then why don't we all stop playing Beatles songs so as to not potentially hack them and soil the Beatles name?
Swanee I though VH was the greatest influentual Rock Band of the 21st Century? Who knew?
Sometimes (manytimes) people reading my posts mistaken simple basic humour for an attack on their persons. I like to take opposite sides so infact we have something to debate about. If I didn't this place would suck more than it already does. The Beatles WERE a great band and their tunes are fun to play and listen too. I think more people have a hair across their ass about AI moreso than any thing else.
3/12/2008 1:10:17 PM
(see I did it again)
3/12/2008 1:10:26 PM
you must be thinking of Chippa, people get us confused all the time.
3/12/2008 1:11:06 PM
And who is AI moreso? Is he that famous Jazz guitarist?
3/12/2008 1:11:41 PM
Oh yeah and Lily Munster is what I've been referring to her as well. So we do agree on some things BK!
3/12/2008 1:11:59 PM
kennium - i wasnt dissing the beatles, it is not possible for me to do so - i have a code in my programming that would cause me to self destruct if that happend.
you do know that if lennon or macca or george brough out a song, they had some more influence in it, that was the point.
i mean, all the songs Clarence Walker lead, clearly it was the other guys you know, just being sidemen.
3/12/2008 1:12:09 PM
It's probably just me. I'm just a lot less offended watching them slaughter Gwen Stefani and JLo tunes.
3/12/2008 1:12:51 PM
Who is Clarence Walker?
3/12/2008 1:15:03 PM
i have 15 beatles tunes in my show. i love doing beatles songs caus' i can feel them! plus they are fun!
3/12/2008 1:19:24 PM
STOP ABBREVIATING AMERICAN IDOL!!! It looks like "Al", and then I think people are talkin' smack about me and I'll have to go cut myself or something.
3/12/2008 1:19:47 PM
oh,,too funny,ai !
3/12/2008 1:24:19 PM

Yes Mike, i was being serious. You may laugh but most high fashion models speak several languages. No trig that i have seen, but they do generally have to do a commercial in a foreign language. Not to mention interviewing someone or giving commentary. In photos they also have to be engaging and evoke some sort of emotion. At least half of the shoots are for artistic value as opposed to just showing off the clothes. Not to mention being able to pull off a high fashion look with clothes found at thrift stores and if another culture is involved, learning something about that culture and bringing that knowledge to the photo shoot. AND then there are some very uncomfortable situations such as having a tarantula on you or modeling as a bull fighter with an actual bull in the ring with you or being hung upside-down in a fishing net over a canal. It is all very interesting. Whew! Don't even get me started on Project Runway.
I know this seems uncharacteristic of me, but I do love fashion and if it weren't for being 5'3" and zaftig, I would totally want to do that.
3/12/2008 1:54:02 PM
That paints a clearer picture Jen, I guess I've seen too many Kate Moss/Naomi Cambell horror stories on the news to know the difference.
Hot and smart huh? My kinda gal.
3/12/2008 2:08:14 PM
I still prefer gorgeous and stupid... ;-)
3/12/2008 2:11:12 PM
I'm not saying they're smart, just that there is far more to it than being pretty.
3/12/2008 2:14:09 PM
jen, i got hooked on it becasue my wife loves it, and i learned to enjoy wathing ANTM to see how plain jane girls or flat out not so attractive girls are put through the paces by gay guys and bitchy older models, bitch brawl on tv and at the same time manage to present how redicuoulsly small thier brains are, all at the same time. a difficult balancing act.
I have come to realize why high fashion is not appealing to men.
1. it is run by bitchy older models OR gay guys, both of which would rather see someone uglier than them on the catwalk
2. see 1.
i think (dont know if it is still on) who wants to be a sports illustrated suimsuit model is more representive of a model show that is probably by straght men, for straight men.
lol
and Project Runway has the same vibe going, PLUS it add Tim Gunn and Heidi... Make it work! or you are... Ought!
3/12/2008 2:15:30 PM
ratchel hunter had a fashion show that was kinda funny to watch too - since she looked drunk, bloated, like she just got out of bed, and they would take people for crappy shopping sprees at low budget places.
3/12/2008 2:16:53 PM
What's your the most obscure Beatles tune on your setlist? I'd have to say "Til There Was You" on ours. We also do "Money" but I think that's probably more well known.
3/12/2008 2:26:55 PM
I love Tim Gunn.
3/12/2008 2:27:28 PM
Hey Prude
3/12/2008 2:28:43 PM
LMAO @ Chippa!
3/12/2008 2:29:40 PM
chippa wont let me put any beatles songs on the set list, and i wouldn't defile a beatles song by letting him play one.
i do have a desire to play beatles sets somewhere, somehow...
3/12/2008 2:34:54 PM
Neither Money nor Til There Was You can be properly called Beatles songs. They're both songs the Beatles covered.
Money is a Motown song and Til There Was You is a showtune from "The Music Man".
3/12/2008 2:43:08 PM
wrong dog, once the beatles do a song, its a beatles song.
they have powers that transend.
3/12/2008 2:58:36 PM
I haven't seen anyone talk about David Cook's version of Eleanor Rigby. I personally like the angsty, tense kind of feel he put into it, and how the piano eerily floated over the verse, and the power he put into his vocals during the chorus. THE only american idol song i've ever downloaded. I have a feeling though, that you either hate or love his version....thoughts?
3/29/2008 10:15:32 PM
A Seattle based band, Doxology, recorded that version of Eleanor Rigby last year. I was screaming at the TV when Cook finished "Billy Jean" and the judges were crediting him for his risk-taking and originality. It's like no one heard the host say that it was Chris Cornell and I'd be willing to be most Idol fans wouldn't know who he is even if they did hear it. Then Cook stood there letting Paula gush about it and he didn't remind anyone that it wasn't his arrangement. I felt somewhat vindicated the next day when it was all over the 'net.
3/30/2008 7:55:44 AM
Chris Cornell's arrangment*
willing to bet*
dammit, get an edit feature!!
3/30/2008 7:56:45 AM
i am the walrus. noone does that song!
3/30/2008 10:57:19 AM
Peter Noone?
3/30/2008 12:10:28 PM
I believe Cornell was credited with the arrangement on the voting night.
