Guitar Hero/Rock Band Bars!
Is this a concept that scares you?
Just imagine it, a stage, in a bar, set up strictly for the game.
Probably have a Karaoke set-up too!
Contests nightly!
Remember you heard it here first! ;-)
2/19/2008 11:23:44 AM
I already said a few weeks ago on another thread that it's only a matter of time for this to happen. It'll be the new karaoke--and gone in 6 months
2/19/2008 11:24:47 AM
I've heard of it done but can't remember where.
2/19/2008 11:25:29 AM
I think the Backstage Grille in Tewksbury already does it. I could be wrong.
2/19/2008 11:26:43 AM
I have heard of it too and also can't remember where.
If it's Rock Band-they won't need karaoke, too.
2/19/2008 11:27:53 AM
it's been done for special evenings, but i see it as a permanent source of entertainment for a bar. Their whole raison d'etre!
2/19/2008 11:28:11 AM
its coming. .....No doubt about it.
They'll have Rap bad soon enough with a fake turntable and mixer, then "Country" and so on .
2/19/2008 11:32:17 AM
I don't know much about french raisins, but yeah, it's catching on quickly.
Goodbye live bands..............
2/19/2008 11:32:40 AM
It'll be a quick passing fad.
I mean how long did the mechanical bull last? 3, maybe 4 years tops?
2/19/2008 11:35:14 AM
Yeah I don't see it replacing live bands as entertaiment. We may have to share the stage however.
2/19/2008 11:47:04 AM
They did a "Rock Band Night" at a local Scottish pub here in Modesto. They put up poster in all the local Starbucks, and I really wanted to go. But, by the time I saw the poster, the date had passed.
Sounds like fun to me!!

2/19/2008 11:48:34 AM
This already happens at Whippersnappers on Wednesday nights.
I've never been, but I saw the promo posters up at the club over the weekend.
2/19/2008 11:53:54 AM
Some said Karaoke was just a fad too.
2/19/2008 11:59:16 AM
I'm sure there's room for live bands as well as Guitar Hero. Guitar hero is going to attract a certain kind of audience, the same way Karaoke does.
I can't imagine that game staying around very long. It just isn't that exciting.
2/19/2008 12:02:12 PM
Yeah, there's room, but the real band will be on the B stage! :-)
2/19/2008 12:04:54 PM
If a live band can't put on a better show than some idiot playing a plastic guitar with colored buttons, I think that band needs to do some soul searching.
2/19/2008 12:06:42 PM
It's not about entertainment value, it's about cost effectiveness.
There are elements of Karaoke, and Guitar Hero that the greatest bands can't compete with.
2/19/2008 12:11:25 PM
Deb's Lakeview has a Guitar Hero night (new) on their website. If you have the GH at home, why would you go out to play it and have to pay extra for beers? It wont last long, its not entertainment, just something for the bored people to do on the slow/off nights that there isnt a band booked. : )
Live music should always come first! : )
2/19/2008 12:15:52 PM
I think the key (whether it's Rock Band Night, or a live band) is audience participation.
Everybody huddled around a widescreen TV, cheering on their friends to Rock Band is just fun.
But, everybody singing along, interacting with the band, and laughing with their friends with the band is just as fun.
I agree with Open Window - a live band should put on a better show than a video game - but let's face it, the days of the RumRunners and the Jass Brothers are long gone. ;)
2/19/2008 12:17:49 PM
You hit the nail on the head Rick:
"Everybody huddled around a widescreen TV, cheering on their friends to Rock Band is just fun.
But, everybody singing along, interacting with the band, and laughing with their friends with the band is just as fun."
Which one costs less in the long run?
The bottom line.
2/19/2008 12:21:28 PM
My point exactly, Rick. This isn't just about competing with a video game. Its about being a good band. Getting the audience involved, providing entertainment, not just background music.
2/19/2008 12:23:31 PM
At the very least, can everyone agree that this has the potential to hurt the already difficult off night gig scene?
2/19/2008 12:23:47 PM
I guess all of us musicians are going to have to start playing for the fun of it (instead of the money).
2/19/2008 12:25:10 PM
Guitar Hero, by definition, is more interactive than any good band could. or should be.
2/19/2008 12:25:22 PM
Capt. I can't agree with that statement.
2/19/2008 12:25:23 PM
which one?
2/19/2008 12:26:40 PM
Rick, does this mean I have to sell my Mercedes that I bought with the truck load of money I made gigging?
2/19/2008 12:26:53 PM
the Vacation home too!
2/19/2008 12:28:24 PM
Oh woe is me.
2/19/2008 12:29:04 PM
Carl tell me what to agree with and I will do whatever that is
2/19/2008 12:29:47 PM
Oh chippa, that's so last week!
2/19/2008 12:30:33 PM
I think the message here is that bands suck and can't compete with a video game. We should all give it up. At least that's how I'm interpreting it.
2/19/2008 12:31:08 PM
chippa... as tasteless as his avatar.
2/19/2008 12:31:41 PM
come on now, its a legit comedic tool
it;s like when a guy tells a joke and then refers back to it right at the end of his act
and watch what you say about america's finest lager
2/19/2008 12:32:53 PM
Open Window, I don't think that's what the Captain was suggesting by opening up this discussion. The points raised are looking through the eyes of the bar/club owner - it's very tempting to have a low cost, easy setup, interactive form of entertainment (instead of a band that might actually send patrons away).
I agree with your earlier statement - all bands need to get better, and work on their showmanship.
2/19/2008 12:34:21 PM
but see, he takes a break from it for a while so you forget, then BANG its back-
and I only hijacked because CM said "can at least everyone agree" which was sort of hortatory and set up the punchline
get out your f*cking thesauruses motherf*ckers
see, I used the ellipsis again- it's a legitimate comedic tool damn you
2/19/2008 12:35:13 PM
chippa, surely, I jest.
2/19/2008 12:35:39 PM
Sure it's low cost. But honestly, if I learn that a club's big attraction is a video game, I'm going somewhere else to nurse my two beers.
2/19/2008 12:36:20 PM
I think it's a great and cheap idea and I'd probably tip a few at an establishment that had it, but a whole bar dedicated to it, I don't see-
maybe a Thursday night (or a Saturday night) but you'd still need to beef up the theme of the place- your karaoke and djs and so forth
2/19/2008 12:37:33 PM
"I think the message here is that bands suck and can't compete with a video game. We should all give it up. At least that's how I'm interpreting it."
I ran it through Babel FIsh and that's what I came up with too!
Oh well, I'll go work on my interactive chops, see ya round the woodshed.
2/19/2008 12:39:45 PM
I can hear the accolades now. "Dude, you can push those buttons like nobody's business. I love the way you hit that blue one."
2/19/2008 12:43:50 PM
"Sure it's low cost. But honestly, if I learn that a club's big attraction is a video game, I'm going somewhere else to nurse my two beers."
That's you (and me for that matter). But rest assured that there -is- a demographic that this kind of thing strongly appeals to.
2/19/2008 1:06:08 PM
I have a whole group of friends that'd effing be there every week. I'd rather shoot myself, I love live bands, but such is life. this kind of thing would be huge and I hope it doesn't take out too many bands...
2/19/2008 1:13:26 PM
i'm screwed with this game caus' i'm color blind. i hear what u are saying, carl. when the hell is it going to end???? what's going to be the next big thing??? i guess we have to be able to change and accept the new changes. or else!
2/19/2008 1:16:31 PM
They have only begun to scratch the interactive surface with this round of games, You'll see.
Anyone can play Rock band, guitar hero and have fun.
It wont replace the good bands out there.
2/19/2008 1:42:41 PM
It won't last.
Not when they have to start replacing the game and the guitar every couple of weeks cause some drunken idiot drops in on the floor, crimps the cable or spills a beer on the console.
2/19/2008 1:56:08 PM
Why would people go out to play a game that they can play at home?
2/19/2008 2:03:59 PM
Marc, you know someone will come up with an industrial version made for clubs that can take a beating.
Hey, they said the same thing about horses once automobiles appeared and the same thing about candles after the invention of electricity and look who's laughing now.
wait a sec..
2/19/2008 2:06:49 PM
Can someone come up with an industrial version of this goddam phone?
2/19/2008 2:10:50 PM
Well, If you ask me (which nobody did but how can I resist)?
I honestly think the reverse will happen. First of all I've heard the complaint on many occasions that bands compete with the gameboy geeks that just rather stay home and play.
Now they have a reason to come out to the clubs. It's no doubt a huge population. I see it as priming the pump. It's only a matter of time when it's realized to all those involved that playing for real is way more challenging.
Would I be incorrect to say that karaoke actually spun off a tom of new bands because singers that started singing karaoke wanted to do the real thing afterwards in a real band.
I think the botom line is that the part of the population that is now not going outside of their living rooms will now start to.
In fact I wouldn't doubt it if you also start to see a surge in the open jams as a result of it.
2/19/2008 2:25:47 PM
I couldn't disagree with you more.
2/19/2008 2:36:51 PM
You could, you're just not trying hard enough.
2/19/2008 2:37:53 PM
If I try any harder I'm gonna hurt myself.
2/19/2008 2:39:28 PM
Juice, Your logic is spot on. I do think we will see a new breed of musicians out of this that was falling away (see my previous thread about this game and its effect on young people) but this new "fad" of game being played at clubs will most likely not spawn new breed of bands. It will however gets some people out togther to have some fun.
2/19/2008 2:40:44 PM
Maxx, Actually I didn't mean to imply that new bands would spawn off as they did from karaoke singers but I do think many will try to play for real and as a result develope a higher appreciation for the talent of a musician and hopefully desire a taste for more live entertainement.
2/19/2008 3:38:06 PM
Well, one thing's for sure, Guitar Hero is creating a resurgence for some great classic rock songs. My 10 year old son is learning Slow Ride and Hit Me with your Best Shot on his REAL guitar becuase he heard the songs on Guitar Hero and loves them.
OH CRAP! just what we need...a bunch of new people learning instruments, forming new bands and creating more competition for gigs. How many ways can this thing screw us! GUITAR HERO is EVIL! It must be stopped!
2/19/2008 3:38:36 PM
I can tell you its been a long time since I have seen a sub30 true Cover band around. Going Commando was one of the first but having "pop" playing bass Balanced it out, hahahaha
2/19/2008 3:47:29 PM
You guys have completely turned me around on this one.
Just as "Risk" created more world domination oriented leaders, and "Operation" created more gifted surgeons, "Battleship" certainly led to our advanced Naval commanders, and my favorite game, "Hungry, Hungry Hippos" led to... well, I don't know.
But "Space Invaders" must have done something!
I'm now positive that Guitar Hero/Rock Band won't take any more nights away from musicians, it'll just make great future musicians like Karaoke has done wonders for the ranks of lead singers.
2/19/2008 3:53:33 PM
Hungry Hippos led to childhood obesity
2/19/2008 3:55:47 PM
Space invaders created "Arcades" in the early 80's which created a place for kids to congregate and therefore share in their search mission for pot and beer. its created Punks, which then spaned the "Rehab Revolution" , which then caused the insurance industry to buckle, and Joan kennedy never did get sober.
2/19/2008 4:00:06 PM
CM
It's too late for you to be turned around. Your too set in your ways.
Live music has been in a downward spiral for so long the pay is barely enough to make ends meet.
When traffic is increased in any establishment it helps support everybody. It becomes more and more the place to go for everyone.
Business is Math. :-)
2/19/2008 10:22:43 PM
Gloria Stivic: "Well, that's convoluted logic"
Archie Bunker: "Yes! And that's the kind of straight thinking I'm trying to put across here!"
2/20/2008 12:20:03 AM
I have a problem with grown ups playing video games to this extent. It may become a fad in clubs, but not in all clubs. The Haluwa has had Karaoke for almost 20 years and it's still known for it's live bands. Guitar Hero ain't gonna replace live bands.
2/20/2008 3:33:51 AM
Captain has a great point. I think for the club scene this is the new karaoke. Cheap investment for the club owner and it has both musical and comical entertainment values as well as it's interactive nature. For bands who play clubs I don't doubt they'll eventually feel the effect for years to come.
2/20/2008 7:09:22 AM
I don't think anyone thinks it will replace live bands but it's definitely on pace to cut into the live bands piece of the pie.
I've never tried it (although I watched my wife and son play). I thought it looked fun but as a "real" guitar player I have no interest. Maybe I'm being smug.
2/20/2008 7:11:50 AM

A conversation between a club owner and a band trying to get booked might go like this...
Band: Hi I'm calling about booking our band in your club. We have a great 5 piece band. Our minimum price is $500. Do you have any Friday or Saturday nights open in the next few months?
Club: Well Friday is Karaoke night and Saturday we have a house DJ.
Band: What about Thursdays?
Club owner: Thursday night is 50 cent drafts and sports on the big screen. My patrons don't like bands playing in the background.
Band: Wednesdays?
Club owner: That's our new Guitar Hero/Rock Band night. Winner takes home a $300 prize! House is packed every Wednesday. Matter of fact it's packed Thu, Fri and Sat too!
Band: (miffed) Do you still book any "real" bands at all?
Club owner: Well Sundays is acoustic music, Mnday night I have some guy doing a video acoustic thing so that leaves Tuesdays. I could put you in here on a Tuesday. Tough night no regular crowd. I could pay you $200.
Band: Never mind. I'll see you Wednesday. I've been meaning to try that guitar Hero thing anyway.
2/20/2008 7:21:32 AM
I haven't tried this game yet, either. Carl mentioned it cutting into, and taking away another "gig" night away from musicians, and I think that, like Karaoke, that will probably happen.
But I'm assuming he meant during the week...
I don't see it replacing live bands on the week-ends, though!
Karaoke has been around a long time, and the major venues still don't schedule that for week-ends.
2/20/2008 7:51:20 AM
Playing live and trying to make 100-200 people happy is a game in itself!
2/20/2008 10:58:16 AM
maxx, thanks for the props!!!
2/22/2008 2:59:15 PM
Tbass you back....wanna get together Sunday?
2/22/2008 3:13:33 PM
Tuesday nights at the Pasta Loft in Milford, NH: Guitar Hero Competitions. Saw it on my way to work this morning and remembered this thread.
